THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders is one of 19 departments and programs within the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS). It has a three-pronged mission of teaching, research, and service in speech-language pathology and audiology. The Department currently has approximately 120 undergraduate and 120 graduate majors, four tenured/tenure-track faculty, two full time clinical faculty (including a clinic director), two half-time speech language pathologists, 5 lecturers, and 3 part-time clinical supervisors. The Norma S. and Ray R. Rees Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic includes eleven observable individual and group therapy rooms, one large group room, an aphasia treatment program (ATP), a conference room, and an audiology test suite. Three labs are currently housed in the department: a fully equipped Speech Science Lab, the Early Social Communication Research Clinic, and an Augmentative and Alternative Communication Lab. The Department is accredited by ASHA’s Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in speech-language pathology and is authorized to grant the Speech Language Hearing Services Credential approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). DUTIES OF THE POSITION: 

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise in speech-language pathology or audiology. The candidate may be assigned supervision of students in clinical work as part of their teaching responsibilities. In addition to teaching, all faculty are expected to sustain a record of scholarly work, advise majors, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.

Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord and online campuses.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant or Associate Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

The Atlanta VA Medical Center is seeking candidates for its 2017-2018 Speech Pathology Clinical Fellowship.

 The Atlanta VAMC is comprised of ~ 200 hospital beds and 100 Community Living Center beds.  We are affiliated with the Emory University School of Medicine and are located in Decatur, near midtown Atlanta, adjacent to Emory University.  The Speech Pathology team serves inpatients, outpatients, and residents of our Community Living Centers.

 The clinical fellow (CF) will interact professionally with specialty services including Neurology, ENT, Medicine, TBI/Polytrauma, Nutrition, Nursing, and other rehabilitation therapies.  The CF will gain experience and provide services in all areas of medical speech pathology, including evaluation/treatment of veterans with swallowing, speech and language, cognitive, and voice disorders.  The CF may also gain specialized experience in artificial airways, neurogenic communication disorders, Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing, and laryngectomy care.  We are seeking candidates with a strong interest in medical speech pathology, as well as a desire to grow professionally in a complex and learning-oriented medical setting.

South Texas VA CFY Opportunity

2017 Clinical Fellowship – Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital Deadline for applications: Friday, February 17, 2017

 

The South Texas Veterans Health Care System Speech-Language Pathology section is pleased to announce two Clinical Fellowship opportunities. The goal of the Clinical Fellowship is to provide experience in the speech-language pathology scope of practice along a broad continuum of care. Both positions are temporary appointments, with a start date of late summer 2017.

The Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital, a level 1A – high complexity facility, is the primary training site and will offer the clinical fellows experience in evaluation and treatment of cognitive communication, language, motor speech, swallowing, and voice disorders.

Training will include:  Fluoroscopic swallow evaluations  Endoscopic swallow evaluations  Stroboscopic voice evaluations  Post-laryngectomy voice restoration

Secondary training sites will be within the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center (one of only 5 sites in the nation), the Community Living Center, and Home Based Primary Care.

The clinical fellows can expect to gain experience in:  Rehabilitation of patients with injuries to multiple systems (polytrauma)  Evaluation and treatment of emerging consciousness patients  Palliative care  Geriatrics  Evaluation and training in use of assistive technology The clinical fellows will also be provided with a shorter rotation at the San Antonio Military Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center and the DoD’s largest inpatient hospital. The VA Mountain Home Health Care System clinical fellowship provides experience in the evaluation and treatment of adults with cognitive communication impairments, aphasia, motor speech disorders, swallowing disorders/dysphagia, and voice disorders.  The Clinical Fellow can expect training in performing fluoroscopic swallow evaluations, stroboscopic voice evaluations, post laryngectomy voice restoration, Clinical Video Telehealth, as well as assistive technology for augmenting communication and cognition.   The clinical fellow works closely with a variety of specialty services and teams including Gastroenterology, Radiology, Neuropsychology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Nutrition, Pulmonology, Primary Care, and the Traumatic Brain Injury/Polytrauma Program.

 

We are currently accepting applications for a Clinical Fellow at Mountain Home, Tennessee with experience in the hospital, outpatient clinic, and Community Living Center (CLC).  The hospital setting includes experiences in acute care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and Clinical Video Telehealth. The CLC provides short-term rehab, respite, hospice/palliative care,  and long-term care.  Outcomes/Evidence based practice for treatment across communicative, cognitive and swallowing disorders is emphasized.

CFY opportunity at University of Wisconsin, Madison Voice and Swallow Clinics

The University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Voice and Swallow Clinics, Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is pleased to announce openings for our 2017 – 2018 Clinical Fellowship Program.

We offer fellowships in three specialty areas: adult voice, adult swallow, and pediatric voice.  Each specialty has its own unique focus, with the goal of the overall clinical fellowship experience being that of a multi-disciplinary approach to medical care for inpatients and outpatients at a state-of-the art institution.

The UW Clinical Fellowship Program is an intensive 12-month program where clinical education is viewed as a dynamic process.  Clinical fellows participate actively in learning to apply didactic information to clinical practice with patients who have a wide range of disorders.
We are seeking clinical fellows who demonstrate strengths in the following:
1. Ability to analyze and synthesize information from a broad-based fund of knowledge in medical communication and voice science and disorders
2. Ability to engage in evidence-based problem solving
3. Motivation to achieve an advanced level of clinical competence in prevention, screening, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with voice and swallowing disorders
4. The ability to communicate effectively and professionally in a multidisciplinary medical setting

In addition to clinical expectations, fellows will be expected to participate in the following:

THE EMORY VOICE CENTER FELLOWSHIP IN VOICE, SWALLOWING, AND UPPER AIRWAY

The Emory Voice Center is a state of the art center within the Emory University Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Each year our experienced Otolaryngology faculty members provide the opportunity for one highly qualified graduate of an accredited Speech-Language Pathology program to complete a 12 month, full time, paid fellowship dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of people with voice, upper airway, and swallowing disorders. The Emory Voice Center is an interprofessional center staffed by specialists in laryngology, speech-language pathology, dysphagia, upper airway, and professional voice. The candidate will participate in the interdisciplinary voice, dysphagia, and upper airway clinics, and work under the mentorship of the Emory Voice Center faculty and professional staff.  The candidate will be a member of a care team that functions on the cutting edge of modern otolaryngology.
This clinical fellowship year offers experience and training in:
Advanced flexible and rigid endoscopic laryngeal imaging, FEES studies, modified barium swallow studies, pharyngeal manometry, acoustic and aerodynamic voice assessment, advanced voice, swallowing and upper airway evaluation and therapy, care of the patient with laryngeal dystonia in interprofessional medical procedure clinics, and possible clinical research opportunities.

The candidate should have attended an accredited graduate program in speech-language pathology and have completed a master’s level course of study prior to beginning the position. The candidate must have solid experience in the evaluation and treatment of voice and swallowing disorders through graduate student work. The candidate must present a strong academic background and solid recommendations from their graduate training program and supervisors during their clinical practicum. Experience in working with the singing voice and bilingualism is a plus.

Bay Pines, FL VA CFY Position Available

CLINICAL FELLOWSHIP YEAR (CFY) IN MEDICAL SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY

The Bay Pines (Florida) VA Healthcare System announces the availability of a Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) opportunity.

Prepare to engage in a clinical fellowship year designed to be thought-provoking and both clinically and professionally challenging. Experience and participate in the evaluation and treatment/management of communicative, cognitive and swallowing disorders; administration, interpretation and clinical implementation related to desk-type measuring instruments; instrumental procedures such as the videofluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing, videostroboscopy, and the endoscopic evaluation of swallowing; alaryngeal speech rehabilitation with emphasis on tracheoesophageal puncture;  the evaluation, management, and selection of alternative/augmentative communication devices/systems; and interventions with polytrauma/traumatic brain injury, cognitive and memory disorder.  Interdisciplinary opportunities are prolific. Outcomes/Evidence-based practice for treatment across communicative, cognitive and swallowing disorders is emphasized.
