PURPOSE STATEMENT The SLP will provide speech, language, hearing and augmentative communication services for individuals and small groups in developmental and remedial models; consult with parents and teachers of children with communication disabilities; provide consultation and related services for students needing accommodations in school settings.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Manage and organize the specialized materials, equipment and environment essential to the speech and language program.

2. Provide educationally related communication intervention for students disabled by disorders of language, speech or hearing in a variety of settings as appropriate.

3. Assess speech and language skills of students suspected of having a communication disorder and consult with teachers in developing IEP goals and objectives.

4. Provide resources, modeling strategies and training to other team members in communication interventions.

5. Communicate regularly the results of individual student assessment and progress with involved school staff (special and general education), parents and where appropriate the students.

6. Design and implement in-class interventions (small groups, large groups and/or individual).

7. Increase knowledge/skills related to communication intervention in the schools through participation in continuing education and in-service opportunities.

8. Work effectively as a team member (i.e. multidisciplinary team, IEP committee, integrative classroom team, etc.) in various settings.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Director of Special Education and building administrators as appropriate.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

• Valid and appropriate Educational Staff Association Speech Language Pathology certificate for the State of Washington.

• Master’s degree in Communication Speech/Language Pathology. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of theory and content in the speech and language field and in the area of assistive technology.

• Experience and training in diagnosis and therapeutic intervention of articulation, expressive and receptive language, fluency, and voice with students ages 3-21.

• Working knowledge of strategies and accommodations to support students in inclusion settings. • Knowledge and/or experience with different languages, language development and cultural diversity.

• Experience with a variety of diagnostic instruments appropriate for students. • Skill and experience working with students who use augmentative and adaptive communication strategies and devices.

• Experience in writing Individual Education Programs (IEPs), including working knowledge of social and behavioral language goals, specific task analysis skills, and ability to write measurable annual goals and objectives.

• Demonstrated knowledge of learning and behavioral needs of students.

• Demonstrated successful experience developing programs of prevention, instruction, remediation and/or evaluation, in implementing in-class service delivery, and providing direct educationally related services in areas of speech and language.

• Demonstrated strength in working on a building special services team which includes general and special education staff, parents, students and community agencies.

• Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, language and learning diversity is desired.

Responsibilities:

 

Teaching graduate/undergraduate courses in communication sciences and disorders, advising students, conducting research in area of expertise, participating in departmental and university committees and/or providing clinical supervision.  In order to be considered for tenure, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to:  1) teach and/or perform assignment effectively; 2) conduct scholarly achievement or research; 3) continue preparation and study in discipline; 4) contribute to student growth and development; and 5) provide service to the university and community. Qualifications and experience:

 

Required:

·         Ph.D./doctorate in communication sciences and disorders or related field at time of application. ABD with defended proposal and significant progress towards completion will be considered, however, the doctorate degree must be completed within one year of hire.

·         Evidence of demonstrated ability to teach and work with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Preferred:

·         Expertise in Adult Communication Disorders, Voice Disorders, Dysphagia and/or Alternative-Augmentative Communication, although all areas of speech and language disorders will be considered.

·         Experience in academic and clinical teaching with documented teaching effectiveness.

·         Willing to work with highly motivated students in a CAA accredited speech language pathology department; good rapport with other professionals; experience and sensitivity in dealing effectively with students, clients, and their families. We are pleased to announce that we have received 1 stipend for a Clinical Fellowship in Speech Pathology and 1 stipend for 350-hour Masters level student for the coming year.

 

Augusta, Georgia is home of the Master’s Tournament and offers a variety of activities for the outdoor enthusiast.  Augusta is home to a large medical community and the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center (CNVAMC) is one of six medical centers within the area.  The CNVAMC is a two division medical center and has been designated as a Level II Polytrauma site.  CNVAMC has CARF accredited programs for inpatient rehabilitation in Spinal Cord Injury, Medical Rehabilitation, and Blind Rehabilitation.

 

Clinical fellows (CFs) are encouraged to be active participants in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams in patient care.  CFs evaluate and treat cognitive communication impairments, motor speech disorders, voice disorders, aphasia, and swallowing disorders related to a variety of diagnoses, including stroke, spinal cord injury, head and neck cancer, TBI, etc.  CFs receive training in instrumental assessment and treatment, including modified barium swallow studies, FEES, and stroboscopy.  CFs will gain experience by working in acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient clinics, and community living centers.

 

CFs with a strong medical speech pathology background, strong academic background, and the desire to grow professionally in a diverse learning environment are encouraged to apply.

 

The Clinical Fellowship stipend is for 1 year and pays approximately

$38,879.00 plus benefits. Health insurance is also available and costs vary depending upon coverage.

Some examples of opportunities for experience include:  MBSS, FEES, stroboscopy, trach/vent, laryngectomy rehabilitation/TEP, TBI, CVA/aphasia, swallow therapy, AAC and voice therapy.  Our team covers inpatient, outpatients, and residents in our Community Living Centers.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: 

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise in speech-language pathology or audiology. The Atlanta VA Medical Center is seeking candidates for its 2017-2018 Speech Pathology Clinical Fellowship.

 The Atlanta VAMC is comprised of ~ 200 hospital beds and 100 Community Living Center beds.  We are affiliated with the Emory University School of Medicine and are located in Decatur, near midtown Atlanta, adjacent to Emory University.  The Speech Pathology team serves inpatients, outpatients, and residents of our Community Living Centers.

 The clinical fellow (CF) will interact professionally with specialty services including Neurology, ENT, Medicine, TBI/Polytrauma, Nutrition, Nursing, and other rehabilitation therapies.  The CF will gain experience and provide services in all areas of medical speech pathology, including evaluation/treatment of veterans with swallowing, speech and language, cognitive, and voice disorders.  The CF may also gain specialized experience in artificial airways, neurogenic communication disorders, Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing, and laryngectomy care.  We are seeking candidates with a strong interest in medical speech pathology, as well as a desire to grow professionally in a complex and learning-oriented medical setting.

South Texas VA CFY Opportunity

2017 Clinical Fellowship – Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital Deadline for applications: Friday, February 17, 2017

 

The South Texas Veterans Health Care System Speech-Language Pathology section is pleased to announce two Clinical Fellowship opportunities. The goal of the Clinical Fellowship is to provide experience in the speech-language pathology scope of practice along a broad continuum of care. Both positions are temporary appointments, with a start date of late summer 2017.

The Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital, a level 1A – high complexity facility, is the primary training site and will offer the clinical fellows experience in evaluation and treatment of cognitive communication, language, motor speech, swallowing, and voice disorders.

Training will include:  Fluoroscopic swallow evaluations  Endoscopic swallow evaluations  Stroboscopic voice evaluations  Post-laryngectomy voice restoration

Secondary training sites will be within the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center (one of only 5 sites in the nation), the Community Living Center, and Home Based Primary Care.

The clinical fellows can expect to gain experience in:  Rehabilitation of patients with injuries to multiple systems (polytrauma)  Evaluation and treatment of emerging consciousness patients  Palliative care  Geriatrics  Evaluation and training in use of assistive technology The clinical fellows will also be provided with a shorter rotation at the San Antonio Military Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center and the DoD’s largest inpatient hospital. Here, the clinical fellows can expect to gain experience in:  Pediatric Swallow Disorders to include Fluoroscopic Swallow Evaluation  Interdisciplinary Infant-Toddler Clinic and Feeding Team

The VA Mountain Home Health Care System clinical fellowship provides experience in the evaluation and treatment of adults with cognitive communication impairments, aphasia, motor speech disorders, swallowing disorders/dysphagia, and voice disorders.  The Clinical Fellow can expect training in performing fluoroscopic swallow evaluations, stroboscopic voice evaluations, post laryngectomy voice restoration, Clinical Video Telehealth, as well as assistive technology for augmenting communication and cognition.   The clinical fellow works closely with a variety of specialty services and teams including Gastroenterology, Radiology, Neuropsychology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Nutrition, Pulmonology, Primary Care, and the Traumatic Brain Injury/Polytrauma Program.

 

We are currently accepting applications for a Clinical Fellow at Mountain Home, Tennessee with experience in the hospital, outpatient clinic, and Community Living Center (CLC).  The hospital setting includes experiences in acute care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and Clinical Video Telehealth. The CLC provides short-term rehab, respite, hospice/palliative care,  and long-term care.  Outcomes/Evidence based practice for treatment across communicative, cognitive and swallowing disorders is emphasized.

Announcing Opening for Speech Pathology Graduate Intern

           The Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center is currently seeking candidates for a Graduate Intern position. The masters-level internship is a 350-hour rotation that includes a stipend of $4511.00. Health insurance is not available for stipend students. The clinical rotation may begin Fall 2017 or Spring 2018.

Located in Long Beach, California, the medical center provides comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, and extended care programs. The Tibor Rubin VA is a 237 bed facility providing primary, secondary, and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. It supports a 99 bed Community Living Center and an 85 bed Spinal Cord Injury Center. In addition, the Tibor Rubin VA is a Level III Polytrauma Center.

The intern can expect to gain experience in evaluation and therapeutic intervention of adults with swallowing, speech, language, cognitive, and voice disorders. Interns will also receive training and experience in the following: fluoroscopic and endoscopic swallowing evaluations, augmentative communication, laryngeal stroboscopy, and post-laryngectomy voice restoration. Patients are seen along the continuum of care from intensive care, acute rehabilitation, outpatient care, and long-term care.
