The job of Speech Language Pathologist is done for the purpose/s of identifying students with communication disabilities; planning and implementing appropriate treatment to minimize adverse impact on student success; recommending treatment plans; and providing direction to Communication Therapy Aides.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
– Administers standardized and/or supplemental assessments (e.g. hearing screenings, etc.) for the purpose of identifying students with communication disorders.
– Assesses students’ communication skills (e.g. articulation, “uency, voice, expressive and receptive language, etc.) for the purpose of identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility and developing recommendations for treatment.
– Collaborates with a variety of groups and/or individuals (e.g. parents, teachers, physicians, administration, maintenance personnel, team members, other professionals, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, resolving issues and providing services in conformance with established guidelines.
– Consults with teachers, parents, other personnel and/or outside professionals for the purpose of providing requested information, developing plans for services, making recommendations and/or coordinating speech/language therapy services with those of other disciplines.
– Coordinates meetings and processes for eligible students (e.g. testing/screening, IEPs, parent conferences, pre- referral sta#ng, GQP meetings, etc.) for the purpose of presenting evaluation results, developing treatment plans, and/or providing training to parents/students/sta$.
– Designs therapeutic strategies for the purpose of modifying communicative behavior and/or identifying appropriate assistive devices.
– Develops treatment plans, interventions and/or educational materials for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of communication disorders in conformance with state and federal regulations.
– Directs the work of assigned Communication Therapy Aides for the purpose of providing guidance and ensuring that program objectives are achieved.
– Instructs Communication Therapy Aides and other sta$ for the purpose of providing information on communicative disorders, use of assistive devices and feeding techniques and/or implementing prescribed treatment plans.
– Instructs eligible students in the use of appropriate communication technologies (e.g. hearing aids, FM systems, augmentative communication devices, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing the adverse educational impact of communication disorders as per state and federal regulations.
– Interprets medical reports within the scope of Speech/Language Pathologist’s experience and goals for the purpose of providing information and/or ensuring that treatment/intervention plans are appropriate.
– Maintains !les and/or records (e.g. progress reports, activity logs, billing information, treatment plans, required documentation, quarterly reports, screening results, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of information as required for reference and/or compliance.
– Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars (e.g. training, IEPs, team meetings, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information.
– Performs site visits at multiple work sites including home visits for the purpose of providing therapy and assistance as required.
– Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. activity logs, correspondence, memos, treatment plans, Medicaid billings, reports, required documentation, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
– Provides speech and language therapy to students for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of speech and language disorders on student success.
– Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students’ needs.
– Responds to inquiries (e.g. parents, teachers, sta$, students, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or referral as appropriate.
– Transports supplies and equipment to a variety of sites for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items as needed.
– Pursues professional development opportunities for the purpose of continued professional growth.
– Integrates specialized !eld within the K-12 learning environment for the purpose of assisting students in achieving their learning goals set forth in the Individual Education Plans (IEP).
– Designs and conducts specialized programs (e.g. prevention, instruction, remediation and evaluation, etc.)
– Manages and organizes special materials, equipment and learning environment essential for specialized program(s) for the purpose of providing materials and/or equipment conducive for student achievement and ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment.

The Department of Human Performance, Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders at West Virginia University (WVU) is seeking a full-time, non-tenure track (12-month) Assistant Professor to contribute to a well-established program with a tradition of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. The successful candidate will contribute to the mission of WVU and the programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders housed within the School of Medicine.
The successful candidate will provide high-quality teaching, coordinate the clinical training of graduate students in audiology and speech-language pathology, and oversee clinical placements of students on and off campus. Primary responsibilities will be to coordinate the clinical training experiences of professional graduate students, including participation in interprofessional education and practice. This faculty member will coordinate and align the evaluation of supervision activities on and off campus while developing and overseeing opportunities for continuing education of clinical supervisors and academic instructors of clinical courses. This faculty member will have expertise in the scholarship of teaching and learning for the field of communication sciences and disorders so as to develop and establish a professional development program for on- and off-campus clinical supervisors. Specifically, the successful candidate will participate in area(s) of scholarship appropriate to areas of expertise leading to peer-reviewed publications and external funding. In addition, the faculty member will provide instruction to students at the undergraduate and graduate level. Individuals with expertise in cochlear implants, pediatric (re)habilitation, adult audiologic (re)habilitation, and vestibular assessment and intervention, but expertise in all aspects of the field of Audiology will be considered.
