Augusta, Georgia is home of the Master’s Golf Tournament and offers a variety of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. Augusta is home to the Georgia Cyber Center and Fort Eisenhower military base. Augusta is home to a large medical community and the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center (CNVAMC) is one of five medical centers within the area. The CNVAMC is a two division medical center and has been designated as a Level II Polytrauma site. CNVAMC has CARF accredited programs for inpatient rehabilitation in Spinal Cord Injury, Subacute/Medical Rehabilitation, and Blind Rehabilitation. Our Speech Pathologists hold many specialty certifications, including Certified Brain Injury Specialist, Board Certification in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders, and Certification in Lee Silverman Voice Therapy, among others, and specialize in patient populations including ALS/AAC, head and neck cancer, brain injury, and palliative care/hospice.

Clinical fellows (CFs) are encouraged to be active participants in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams in patient care. CFs evaluate and treat cognitive communication impairments, language disorders, motor speech disorders, voice disorders, and swallowing disorders related to a variety of diagnoses, including stroke, spinal cord injury, head and neck cancer, TBI, neurodegenerative diseases, etc. CFs receive training in instrumental assessment and treatment, including modified barium swallow studies and FEES. CFs will gain experience by working in acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient clinics, and community living centers. CFs work closely with many specialty services and teams, including gastroenterology, radiology, neurology, neuropsychology, rehabilitation medicine, nutrition, pulmonology, otorhinolaryngology, primary care physicians, mental health, and the TBI/Polytrauma program.

CFs with a strong medical speech pathology background, strong academic background, and the desire to grow professionally in a diverse learning environment are encouraged to apply.

The Clinical Fellowship stipend is for 1 year (12 months, Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week) and pays approximately $41,206.00 plus benefits. Health insurance is also available and costs vary depending upon coverage.

We currently have 4 full-time Speech Pathologists at our two-division Medical Center. The VA Puget Sound Health Care System Clinical Fellowships provide experience in medical speech pathology.  The Clinical Fellowship is divided into 3-4 separate rotations, located at both the Seattle and American Lake Divisions (in Lakewood Washington), with training in acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, community living centers, and specialty outpatient clinics (e.g. ALS, Polytrauma, Stroke).  The Clinical Fellow may have opportunity for specialized training in endoscopy, post laryngectomy voice restoration, and assistive technology.   The Clinical Fellow will work closely with a variety of specialty services and teams, including Rehabilitation Medicine, Nutrition, Otolaryngology, Neurology, Neuropsychology, Primary Care, Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injury/Disease, and the Traumatic Brain Injury/Polytrauma Program.  The fellowships offer opportunity to participate in SLP journal clubs, national and local quality improvement programs, surgical observations and multidisciplinary team presentations.  Our staff Speech Pathologists are devoted to our training/mentoring program and clinical fellows can expect to work closely with their clinical supervisors.

We are seeking applicants with a strong interest in medical speech pathology, an ability to learn in a fast paced environment, have a strong academic background, and some clinical experience in a medical setting.

The Clinical Fellows can expect to gain experience in all areas of medical speech pathology, including evaluation and treatment of individuals with speech, language, cognitive, voice, and swallowing disorders.  In addition, the Clinical Fellows will receive training and experience in the following:  fluoroscopic and endoscopic swallowing evaluations, augmentative communication, laryngeal stroboscopy, and post-laryngectomy voice restoration.  Patients are seen along the continuum of care from intensive care, acute rehabilitation, outpatient care, and long-term care.

The San Diego VA Speech Pathology Department provides services to a varied outpatient population and to inpatients throughout the medical center.  The Clinical Fellow will be expected to evaluate and treat patients within the Outpatient Clinic, Spinal Cord Injury unit, Comprehensive Inpatient Acute Rehab unit, Community Living Center, Palliative unit, Psych unit, ICU, and medical surgical floors.  Some of the populations served included neuro (CVA, ALS, MS, Parkinson’s), head and neck cancer, vent/trach, mTBI, TBI, voice and alaryngeal speakers.  Specialty procedures provided include FEES, MBSS, video stroboscopy and voice prosthesis management.

The appointment is 12 months, 2080 hours.  Start date as early as July 2024; no later than September 2024.

Work week = 40 hours.  Tour to be discussed at interview.  Speech Pathology services are offered at this site 7 days/week.  Stipend of $46,692 + benefits

Clinical Fellow (CF) training positions in Speech Pathology are available at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) for the coming year. The positions involve clinical rotations through both the University Drive and H.J. Heinz divisions of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System as well as participation in a unique intensive residential aphasia treatment program (https://veteranshealthfoundation.org/pirate/). There is a significant emphasis on mentoring during these fellowships and interested individuals can expect to gain experience with and knowledge of the full range of adult medical Speech-Language pathology services.

The University Drive division is a Level 1a (highest complexity) acute care hospital offering both inpatient and outpatient Speech Pathology services while the Heinz division is a skilled nursing facility with acute and sub-acute rehabilitation, and palliative care units. Both sites provide telehealth services. Opportunities to learn or further develop skills in clinical swallowing evaluations, instrumental swallowing evaluations, TEP placement/management, and tracheostomy and ventilator dependent communication and swallowing evaluation/management will be provided. Clinical experiences in diagnosis and treatment of aphasia, motor speech disorders, and cognitive-communication impairments are also an integral part of the CFY.

The Speech-Language Pathology Section at MVAHCS is pleased to announce two (2) Clinical Fellowship positions available with start in Summer 2024.

Clinical Fellows participate in an interdisciplinary team approach to evaluation and treatment of veterans and service members.  Veterans served cross the age span from young adult through older adult populations.   CFs evaluate and treat communication, cognitive and swallowing disorders related to stroke, head and neck cancer, TBI & Polytrauma and a wide variety of other medical diagnoses. They may provide aural rehabilitation and transgender communication services, as well.  CFs receive training in instrumental assessment and treatment procedures including modified barium swallows, FEES, and stroboscopy. CFs are active participants in the care of patients in medical and surgical wards, rehabilitation units (acute, subacute), telehealth, outpatient clinics, and intensive care unit.  The Minneapolis VA Health Care System is a specialty site for Assistive Technology, a TBI Center of Excellence, and is one of five recognized Polytrauma Centers in the VA.  MVAHCS offers CARF-accredited programs in inpatient rehabilitation for amputation, brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, residential transitional rehabilitation for brain injury, outpatient brain injury and spinal cord injury, assistive technology, and chronic pain.

The Speech Pathology program at the San Francisco VA System of Care provides diagnostic and rehabilitative services for acute and critical care inpatients, out-patients (including telehealth delivery of care), short stay in-patient rehabilitation  and residents of our Community Living Center for Veteran populations ranging from young adult to geriatric.  The CF will provide services in all areas of medical speech pathology, and may also gain specialized experience in endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, tracheostomy, post-laryngectomy voice restoration, AAC use particularly in the ALS population.   The SFVA Medical Center has 1 of the 6 PADRECC Centers in the VHA and the CF will gain experience in treating PD voice and swallowing with all supervisors being LSVT and Speak Out! certified clinicians.

The South Texas Veterans Health Care System Speech-Language Pathology section is pleased to announce two Clinical Fellowship opportunities for 2024-2025. The goal of the Clinical Fellowship is to provide experience in the Speech-Language Pathology scope of practice along a broad continuum of care. These positions are temporary appointments, not to exceed one year. The Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital, a level 1A – high complexity facility, is the primary training site and will offer the clinical fellow experience in evaluation and treatment of cognitive communication, language, motor speech, swallowing, and voice disorders. The New Mexico VA Health Care System is pleased to announce a speech-language pathology clinical fellowship (CF) position for the 2024-2025 year. The Clinical Fellowship provides a well-rounded experience in the evaluation and treatment of adults in all areas of medical speech pathology including dysphagia, speech and language disorders, cognitive disorders, voice disorders, and tracheostomy.
