The Speech-Language Pathology Service at Cincinnati VA Medical Center offers one-year Clinical Fellowship opportunities in Speech-Language Pathology. Clinical fellows are full-time, funded employees who have the opportunity to achieve their clinical learning goals, including development of advanced practice skills, while being mentored by experienced clinicians. Fellows work and learn in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings within the Medical Center, and they engage in interprofessional practice with specialty services including Neurology, Otolaryngology, Medicine, Oncology, TBI/Polytrauma, Nutrition, Nursing, and other rehabilitation therapies. Hands-on clinical teaching and supervision allow Fellows to develop the skills and abilities needed to manage a full-time, complex patient caseload. Fellows also engage in a variety of didactic and academic learning opportunities, including participation in interdisciplinary and community SLP journal clubs, attendance at College of Medicine Grand Rounds, surgical observations, onsite training in flexible endoscopy, and opportunities for postgraduate learning through in-person and virtual trainings and conferences. In addition, Fellows will participate in clinical research and/or quality improvement programs that can train skills necessary for a future career incorporating clinical research.
The Speech Pathology Section serves acute and critical care inpatients, outpatients, and residents of a Community Living Center. Fellows will gain experience and provide services in all general areas of medical speech pathology, including evaluation and treatment of individuals with dysphagia, speech and language disorders, cognitive disorders, voice disorders, and tracheostomy. They will also gain experience in subspecialty areas of speech language pathology, which may vary according to the specific professional goals and interests of the selected Fellows. Overall, we are seeking candidates with a strong interest in medical speech pathology and a desire to grow and develop professionally in a fast-paced, learning-oriented medical setting.   • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency
  • Commitment to 12 months of federal employment at Cincinnati VA Medical Center
  • Graduation from a fully accredited Speech-Language Pathology graduate program (M.A. or M.S.)
  • Eligibility for licensure in speech-language pathology and application for conditional licensure
  • Strong academic performance and interest in neuroscience, neurogenic cognitive/communication disorders, voice, and dysphagia, as evidenced by academic transcripts
  • Interviews will be scheduled in mid-February with the selection team for top candidates, in person or via videoconference

Assistant Professor Position Announcement

The Speech-Language Pathology Graduate program in the Frances M. Maguire School of Nursing and Health Professions at Gwynedd Mercy University invites applications for 2 full-time Assistant Professor faculty positions. The Assistant Professor positions are 9-month appointments and may be tenure or non-tenure track. Rank and salary will be commensurate with education and teaching experience.

Responsibilities:

Primary duties include teaching in-person and online graduate and post-baccalaureate program classes. Additional responsibilities include supervising students in clinical placements, developing and maintaining a research program, and providing service to the program, university, and professional community. The successful candidate will be a dedicated teacher-scholar-mentor committed to evidence-based practice, experiential learning, and inclusive pedagogies. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Teach graduate and post-baccalaureate courses online and in-person in areas of professional expertise
  2. Supervise students in simulated and direct clinical practicum placements
  3. Develop and maintain an active research program in area of expertise/interest
  4. Provide service to the program, university, and profession
  5. Perform other academic and clinical duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D., or EdD. in speech-language pathology or a related field. Will consider ABDs
  • Certified Speech-Language Pathologist with a current CCC-SLP
  • Current PA state SLP license or eligibility to obtain a PA state SLP license.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: adult neurogenics, dysphagia, voice, fluency, AAC, speech sound disorders, and child language disorders.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, collaborative, and problem-solving skills

Some of what you will do
The Speech Language Pathologist 2 will be primarily responsible for providing speech pathology services for individuals with intellectual disabilities as a professional member of an interdisciplinary team. Speech Language Pathologist 2 responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing, implementing, and supervising formal communication programs/interventions to address identified communication needs for each of the clients on your caseload
  • Providing individual written assessments/evaluations for an intellectually disabled population with multiple disabilities as pertain to speech, language, or hearing disabilities
  • Evaluating recommendations and monitoring clients with dysphagia. To achieve this, we will provide on-the-job training aimed at enhancing dysphagia skills.
  • Work within an interdisciplinary team (IDT) and develop intervention/programs that support IDT-identified priorities; prioritize individual needs as determined by team consensus
  • Designing and constructing adaptive equipment for communication
  • Evaluating, acquiring, and programing communication devices
  • Creating communication displays using Boardmaker or other graphic software
  • Consulting with other professionals and staff on program development

What we’re looking for:

  • Ability to provide communication-based behavior services to individuals with cognitive impairments exhibiting significant behavioral challenges complicated by communication needs
  • Ability to coach and train caregivers, communication partners, and team members
  • Ability to work as a collaborative team member
  • Ability to perform informal, functional communication evaluations
  • Ability to target functional, everyday communication skills
  • Ability to provide dysphagia services, including: conduct clinical swallow evaluations, develop accommodations and interventions, make recommendations, and participate in MBS evaluations. In order to accomplish this, we will offer on-the-job training designed to improve dysphagia expertise.
  • Ability to communicate with nonverbal clients
  • Ability to effectively communicate with management, peers, clients, and the public as required to carry out the assigned duties of the position
  • Ability to comprehend and effectively communicate all issues related to client care and facility operations

Who should apply?
 
Required Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology or Communicative Disorders or documentation of American Speech-Language Hearing Association approved equivalent to the Master’s degree consisting of approved curriculum and student practicum hours.

  • A Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience as a speech pathologist or audiologist is preferred
