Tateuchi East Asia Library: News and Projects

November 4, 2019: Open Education and Open Access

The second of our Autumn quarter workshops explored two forms of “open” publishing, both aimed at broadening access to scholarly literature: Open Access and Open Educational Resources. Open Access is an emergent form of scholarly publishing that aims to make cutting edge research literature—today often locked behind expensive pay walls—freely available to readers. UW Libraries Scholarly Publishing Outreach Librarian Liz Bedford introduced various models being adopted for this. Open Educational Resources are learning materials that instructors and students can freely create, use, and modify according to their needs. Open Education Librarian Lauren Ray discussed some of the methods and platforms under exploration. “Openness” has wide appeal but is fraught with challenges. Both presenters shed light on the legal, ethical, economic, and technical complexities of deeper implementation, and connected broader practices with those in East Asian studies fields, stimulating lively conversation.
