February 3, 2020: Text Analysis

Text analysis and text mining are increasing in popularity in social scientific and humanities scholarship, including in East Asian studies fields. Some workshop participants were already incorporating such methods in their research, either personally or through collaboration with others, while others were interested in learning more. UW eScience Institute Natural Language Processing Specialist Varun Panicker provided both groups with much food for thought, offering a comprehensive introduction to natural language processing approaches to text analysis from computational, linguistic, programming, and interpretive perspectives. He also surveyed specific tools and methods, from ready-made applications to coding languages, and outlined support and study resources on and off campus. A lively discussion followed the presentation, with participants seeking advice on projects and sharing experiences.
