Welcome to the first day of Fall Quarter and the final day of September, Huskies! We at The Dawgcast are anticipating another great quarter full of forecasts, blogs, and a chance of broadcast videos!

Classes are not the only thing that returned today. Wildfire smoke from California is back covering the skies of western Washington. Many Puget Sound residents awoke to hazy skies and a red-tinted sun. Thankfully, the smoke will be nowhere near as bad as a couple weeks ago, as the smoke from the fires is mostly aloft, well above the surface. Air quality is currently a mix of “Good” and “Moderate” in Washington.

Smoke is not the only thing obscuring skies this morning. Shallow fog developed overnight in Seattle and currently blankets the campus. Today’s view from the Atmospheric Sciences Building is quite the contrast to yesterday’s blue skied masterpiece. For an interesting 360-panoramic view of Seattle, check out the Space Needle’s webcam. Note how the fog is low to the ground and covers the Puget Sound and Lake Washington. Most of the taller buildings downtown, like the Space Needle, poke above the surface hugging fog, allowing for expansive views.

Due to the smoke, high temperatures today will be cooler than previously expected, but are still likely to reach the low-to-mid 70s, warmer than usual for this time of year. The warm weather will persist into the weekend. Overnight temperatures will still remain cool with morning lows in the low-to-mid 50s.

Have a great start to your quarter, Huskies!
