Forecast: November 14th, 2021

Happy Sunday, Huskies!

We’re pretty far from those summer days that, while enjoyable, are often pretty boring from a weather perspective. A calendar could tell you that (as could today’s 4:35 PM sunset!), but the 2021 rendition of November has also proven to be anything but boring! We’ve already seen a pair of atmospheric rivers pay us a visit, and they’ve brought us a great deal of rain. In fact, with less than half the month under our belt, November 2021 ranks in the top half of all Novembers on record at Sea-Tac for precipitation, with 5.99” (36th out of 77)! Wind has also been a fairly common partner in crime with the rain, and that’s certainly true of the next 36 hours. No matter what you like, it’s all on tap this week to some degree!

Today will be a warm, windy and somewhat wet wrap to the weekend. We won’t be soaked as thoroughly as we were at Husky Stadium last night, with today’s precipitation being more showery. The real intrigue comes with the gusty southerly winds that are taking aim across the region as the low pressure system moves in to our north. The North Sound in particular has been hammered this morning, and that will continue today into tomorrow. We are notably warm thanks to that low pressure system pulling tropical moisture and air all the way to Washington, with the end result being a push for 60° this afternoon and almost zero overnight temperature change.

Tomorrow offers a ton of excitement, as we start in the mid to upper 50s with showery conditions persisting across the region. Around the time you’re getting ready to head to that first class of the week, winds will be at their peak for this storm, gusting as high as 45-50 mph around Seattle. As mentioned above, Everett and surrounding communities may be hit even harder due to the tighter pressure gradient up north. Stay safe out on campus while this breezy blast works its way through the Sound; I know I’ll need to follow my own advice since I’m leading a 10:00 AM campus tour! What makes tomorrow so unique is that the temperature will steadily decline throughout the day, from a morning high of 57° to an afternoon low of 42°. Talk about backwards! While temperatures drop, winds will also subside significantly, but the rain will pick up. Most areas can expect at least an additional half inch tomorrow, which would push us a few spots up on that rain ranking!

The rest of the week shows the promise of some brief sunshine, a very chilly overnight low of 33° into Wednesday morning that excites me as a fan of those cold wintery days, and the return of the rain towards the tail end of the week, albeit about ten degrees colder than today! The development of the next series of systems, and the confidence in just how cold it’ll get on Tuesday night will only get clearer as we get closer, so stay tuned to the Dawgcast throughout the week! Stay warm and dry, and have a great week eight!
