Good afternoon, Huskies! Hope you all had a good week 4, and with midterms quickly approaching, take the increasingly late sunsets as motivation! 🌆
This week has been an unexciting trend weather wise. Clouds, clouds and more clouds! ☁️ This is common for a January in Seattle, and sometimes it can be hard to remember what the sun looks like! Temperatures have been in the normal range these last couple of days, highs in the mid-40s and lows in the high-30s to low 40s! But rain wise this month we are below average on precipitation. We can look more closely at this here!!!!
We can see here how a lot of days we had a trace, or even no rain! But commonly in January, rain is seen more normally daily! 🌧️
Alright, moving on from this week’s unexceptional weather, let’s look ahead to this weekend! A small system of rain came across Seattle last night, but the rest of today looks to be on the drier side. Saturday looks to be mostly dry, but some small showers could appear throughout the day, so maybe have your umbrella ready just in case! ☂️
Now let’s talk about Sunday!!!!!! The reason I’m excited about the weather on Sunday is because things get a little interesting! From late Saturday night to early morning Sunday, an arctic air mass will be making its way over the northwest. What does this mean exactly? Cold air!!!!! This air mass is going to bring our temperatures significantly lower than what we have seen this past week, and climate wise for January! Looking closer at how drastic this temperature change is, let’s look at this model!
The model on the top is for today, the colors are a representation of the temperature, and we can see that today is on the mild side, nothing out of the ordinary! But look to the bottom of this at Sunday afternoon, now you don’t have to be a meteorologist to see how much different that is! The mild temperatures were pushed aside and taken over by this cold Arctic air mass! So, you’re going to want to bundle up for the 2nd half of the weekend and the first half of the week while this cold air sticks around. Now how cold exactly is this Arctic air going to make the temperatures? For Sunday through around Tuesday, highs will be in the mid-30s, and overnight lows will dig down into the low-20s! This is far below our average January lows of the high-30s!
Also- look out for some wind gusts, which will bring feel-like temperatures down with this air mass as well!!!! 🌬️
We can see here how wind chill is going to make Sunday morning temperatures feel very cold throughout WA.
This air mass is bringing along with it an area of high pressure, which you can see in the model above represented by the H, along with this, we are expected to see some mostly clear(!) skies by Sunday at dinnertime. So expect a bit of sun!
Now, just a sneak peek into the second half of next week, we should see temperatures climb back up to normal around Thursday, and the clouds will make a return to their regularly scheduled programming!
Overall, Huskies, stay tuned for some cold weather coming up soon! Good luck on upcoming midterms and have a nice weekend!!!!
