Hey Huskies! We’re halfway through winter quarter and, therefore, most of the way through the Big Dark!

With that, we would like to take a quick look at how we’ve been doing in February. We are hovering just over the average normal temperature for this time of year, while slightly lacking in the rain gauge. Overall, these conditions are what we would expect during a typical El Nino year and are seasonal compared to the warm temperatures we experienced towards the end of January.

A few lingering showers this morning will soon dissipate for a drier afternoon. As for the rest of the school/work week, expect some showers around on Thursday and Friday, but also a chance for sunbreaks each day. High temperatures will hang around the mid-40s with a low near the 40-degree mark. We expect to continue this trend of near-average temperatures without any outstanding weather events into the weekend.

As we March on through February (no pun intended), things will inevitably begin to get brighter outside with the increase in daylight hours. The graphic below shows sunset times for the next eight weeks. Note the jump in sunset time in mid-March thanks to daylight savings. 7:00 pm sunsets will be here before you know it!

Looking ahead in terms of climate, the National Climate Prediction Center calls for a drier than average pattern with above-normal temperatures. However, it is important to note that climate and weather are two different things, and what we experience at a given time does not always align with our climate outlooks.

Keep on trudging through the midterms and the last of the Big Dark! You’ve got this Huskies!
