Summer? I Hardly Know Her

Hey there Huskies!

Another Wednesday, another dreary day around Puget Sound. We hope you brought your rain jackets and boots, because as we write this blog it’s pouring outside on campus. We have already had a rogue lightning strike over the Sound thanks to a tiny little bit of atmospheric instability. While it’s not looking like the Midwest out there, it’s certainly interesting by PNW standards (we’re desperate for interesting weather).

The chance of thunderstorms and showers will stick around until the early evening hours tonight, when surface heating will vanish. Highs today won’t even reach the 60 degree mark, and our overnight lows will be near record-cold for late May. It really does feel more like March out there today.

As for the rest of our week going into our weekend, Thursday and Friday will be far nicer than today. Friday in particular looks to be pleasant for outdoor activities, a nice respite from the cold and rainy conditions before this weekend. There’s talk of an atmospheric river event beginning on Sunday, with the potential of near record-breaking amounts of rain for this time of year.

Taking a look at the UW WRF’s integrated water transport forecast for Sunday afternoon, it appears that a lot of moisture will be making a beeline for Washington and Oregon. There’s still some uncertainty as to where and when the resulting rain will come down. As of now though, it would be good to expect a very wet welcome to finals week.
