Ending June Below Average Before a Warmup for July 4

By Joseph Renalds

Happy Saturday Huskies,

The last week has been fairly calm in terms of weather as we are getting ready to wrap up June and enter the warmest part of our year. The misty conditions we had on Thursday were a far cry from the three consecutive days of getting into the low 100s we experienced three years ago. In fact, June is looking to end slightly below average for temperatures and precipitation. The bulk of rain came in the first few days of the month in the form of a late season atmospheric river. Since then, we have had days with rain showers, but nothing significant was recorded by the SeaTac station.

This weekend has started very nicely with temperatures getting up into the low 70s in the Seattle area and clouds increasing throughout the afternoon. We will be seeing some rain around tonight and into Sunday morning, but it will be less than a quarter inch for most locations. Some areas north of Seattle could see higher amounts due to a convergence zone.

After this little bout of rain however, we will see dry conditions return as a ridge builds over the west coast.

One weather colloquialism often used around here is that summer does not start until after July 4. Well, this year seems to be matching up perfectly with this since we will be seeing temperatures climb into the low 80s towards the end of next week. There is still some variability in what temperatures we can expect, but ensembles seem to be converging on the low-to-mid 80s. There are also some indications that this period of 80 degree temperatures could last for a week so we will keep you updated as forecast details become clearer.

The forecast for July 4th itself is on the front side of our warmup so temperatures range from being in the 90s in eastern Washington, near 80 in the western lowlands, and 60s along the coast. Skies should also be clear if you are planning to attend any July 4 festivities.

Have a great rest of your weekend Huskies!
