Hey Huskies!

Another week, another Monday, and another blog from your Broadcasters here at The UW Dawgcast.

First off, The Big Dark? Pshhhhah! Although we may be feeling the effects of the shorter days and colder temperatures, campus has been basking in the sun with a relatively reliable pattern of dry weather in the New Year. Get this: out of the 27 days of January, Seattle has received 12 days of sub-freezing temperatures all with clear skies to match. That trend will continue into the next few days as an area of high temperature sits across the Seattle metropolitan area, boxing out the clouds. Without this thermal insulation, warm air escapes into the atmosphere at night, giving rise to the brisk winter temperatures we’ve been experiencing these past few weeks. However, that high won’t be sitting over us forever thanks to an incoming front, but the cold it brings could lead to future rainfall events being less wet and more… well snowy.

Back to the week at hand, we’ll enjoy sunshine for three more days, but brace yourself for some very cold mornings. Lows could drop below the 30s on both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Things take a turn starting Thursday, as a trough moves into the Seattle area, bringing significant changes to that high pressure Seattle is under. After a cloudy Thursday, rain will return to campus on Friday, with a considerable precipitation amount expected.

Think we’re settling back into Seattle’s typical rainy pattern? Forecast models are hinting at something interesting for the weekend and early next week. Cold air following the trough could bring snow flurries down to lowland areas—a rare winter treat! Nevertheless, current numerical and AI-based weather models are not yet in agreement, so we’ll keep a close eye on the potential for winter weather in the coming days. Stay tuned!

Midterm season is almost here for campus, so enjoy the sunny and dry days while they last and have a great rest of your Monday Huskies!
