Hurricane Melissa & A Rainy Halloweek

Hey Huskies! Happy Halloweek and week 6 into the quarter! This past weekend brought some huge winds and lots of power outages for the greater Seattle Area. Let’s see what’s on the agenda for the rest of the week.

In case you are unaware, Hurricane Melissa was upgraded to a Category 5 this morning. Melissa is currently churning just south of the island of Jamaica. Hurricane Hunters measured a HUGE pressure drop in the storm…the latest measurements have recorded 906 mb. (for reference, typical surface air pressure lies around 1000mb…so the storm has effectively “sucked up” 1/10th of the atmosphere!). Melissa is predicted to turn northeast this afternoon and make landfall in Jamaica late tonight as a Category 5 storm. Jamaica and continue through eastern Cuba and the Bahamas. With several feet of rain, winds over 175 miles per hour, and over 10 feet of storm surge, large portions of Jamaica will be devastated. If you have the means, please donate to recovery efforts, especially local organizations.

As for local weather, we’re looking at typical Seattle fall conditions with lots of clouds, brisk temperatures, and some rain on Tuesday night. It might be a rainy and windy Halloween, but it’s a bit too early to tell…Just make sure your party of choice takes place indoors and that loose costume accessories are securely fastened.

Keep an eye out on Thursday for a more thorough Halloween forecast. Otherwise, good luck on midterms, and get those assignments in before Friday! Have a great week, Huskies!
