Get to know the 2019-2020 ALPFA UW Executive Board

GONZALO VILLACORTA- President

Major & Year: Marketing/Junior

Hometown: Fife, WA
Why ALPFA: ALPFA has given me everything I needed to be the person that I am today. When I first came here my freshman I had no idea where to start and I ran into Andy and he connected me with the President of ALPFA at the time and convinced me to come to a meeting. In my first meeting, people were very welcoming and eager to have new faces in the room and they made a big university feel a little smaller and they made it feel like home. Besides the connections and the professional development that ALPFA offers, I was able to make new friends and feel stabilized in a university that is so big full of opportunities. I want to offer and create that same feeling to the upcoming ALPFA members and make this club their home away from home.
Hobbies/Fun Facts: I enjoy watching and playing soccer with my friends. I am very passionate about the sport and I have played it since I was 5 years old and I have been able to travel around the country to play soccer at a select club level. One of my fun facts is that I traveled to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup to watch my home country, Peru, play in their first World Cup for the first time in 36 years.

VANESSA SANTAMARIA-VP of Finance

Major & Year: Sophomore, Accounting , Minor in French & Education
Why ALPFA: Coming to UW was actually very overwhelming for me, not really seeing other Latinos across campus and without a sense of direction I felt lost and alone. In ALPFA I found a familia and I am so glad that I joined right off the bat. As a member the previous year, I quickly realized how many opportunities being a part of ALPFA provides and wanted to be as involved as possible. I was originally mainly seeking professional growth, but was quickly overpowered by ALPFA’s mission and passion which grew my desire to give back and empower underrepresented communities. I really have ALPFA and its members to thank for all of my professional and personal development and am even more thankful for the support I have received. Within a short period of time, I had a real resume, a LinkedIn, a solid network, and a summer internship for the next year set up.
Holding a position on the Executive Board is the best position to help improve ALPFA and assist in developing its members. I wanted to support the members as they had also helped me. Academic achievement is undeniably important for business students, but our network and the relationships you build with professionals and peers are far more substantial.
Furthermore, being part of ALPFA is what challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and attain opportunities I never imagined being possible. Through my involvement I was able to immensely grow professionally, while giving back to other students of color by sharing the resources and opportunities I have received throughout my collegiate experience. It is because I believe in empowering my community and giving back that I plan on being a part of the ALPFA Professional Chapter and continue doing what I am most passionate about.
Hobbies/Fun Fact: I am pretty flexible, both literally & figuratively, and love doing yoga!
