Since 2017, our team has been working to address the critical issue of newborn mortality by using affordable and accessible mobile virtual simulations to help health professionals maintain their knowledge and skills.

VISION
Our Vision is that every healthcare professional globally will access virtual simulation training to maintain their skills.
VALUES
The Problem of Neonatal Mortality
A baby is most likely to die during the first 28 days of life. Up to 75% of newborn deaths happen in the first week. Prematurity, intrapartum (birth) asphyxia, and infections are the main causes of neonatal mortality.
This is especially true in low and middle income countries with limited resources, low rates of antenatal care, and too few healthcare professionals with training in essential newborn care.
Developing vENC
Our team has over a decade of experience in developing and evaluating virtual reality simulations for health professional education using an iterative, human-centered design approach with local and global stakeholders.
vENC is conceptually based on an adult learning theory called Ericsson’s deliberate practice paradigm, which states that learners should practice their skills with expert coaching and feedback until they can perform the skills well. vENC simulations are built on a modular, expandible framework using the Unity platform with scenarios that build skills through repetition of important steps, guidance, and real-time feedback. Performing the correct actions with few or no hints is necessary to achieve a passing score and advance to the next level.
The research/quality improvement vENC version features offline data collection and upload of metrics to support instructors in identifying gaps in learning and skills.
Curricular Framework
The vENC scenarios were developed to align with the World Health Organization Essential Newborn Care Course (2nd edition)
ENC 1 is an updated version of Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) which teaches how to care for a baby from birth to 60 minutes of life. ENC 2 is an updated form of Essential Care for Every Baby (ECEB) and Essential Care for Small Babies (ECSB). It focuses on care between 60 and 90 minutes after birth and after that.
vENC simulations feature a range of healthy and sick term and premature infant scenarios from neonatal resuscitation to early newborn care and referral for advanced care, if needed, in the first week of life.

Why Virtual Reality?
- Virtual simulations provide an immersive and engaging learning experience.
- Gamification with audio cues, animations, time keeping, and score tracking keeps learners motivated, cementing learning and promoting retention.
- Designed for use offline when no internet is available.
- Convenient access on smartphones and tablets
- Practice anytime, anywhere, with or without a simple VR headset.
