Alumni

Our alumni do a lot of interesting things. Here’s a list of some cool things that they do, along with some embarassing retro photos …

Brian Allen is leveraging his background in sensory neuroscience, R&D, and human factors to promote data-driven & user-centric product design (Postdoc Advisor: Ione Fine)
Michael Beyeler is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Psychological & Brain Sciences at UC Santa Barbara. He is Associate Director of the UCSB Center for Virtual Environments and Behavior (ReCVEB) and recipient of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award as well as the prestigious DP2 New Innovator Award. (Postdoc Advisors: Ione Fine, Geoffrey Boynton)
Paola Binda is Associate Professor at the University of Pisa. She has recently been awarded a prestigious ERC Grant  investigate the relationships between the brain (in particular the areas associated with sight), personality and metabolism (Postdoc Advisors: Geoffrey Boynton, Scott Murray)
Andrew Bock is a data scientist with expertise in machine learning, artificial intelligence, data visualization, and communication. (Postdoc Advisor: Ione Fine)
Zachary Ernst  has combines his interest in what Geoff described as driving a urine powered car with his data scientist skills in the renewable energy / cleantech space. He led analytics at an energy storage software startup (acquired in 2020), and now work as a data scientist at Sunrun modeling and analyzing distributed solar and storage virtual power plants (Graduate Advisors: Geoffrey Boynton, John Palmer)
Rebecca Equenazi is a UX researcher who uses quantitative and qualitative methods to provide insights in the digital product space.
Anastasia Flevaris is Senior Director of Data Science at Nike. (Postdoc Advisor: Scott Murray)
Libby Huber is a research scientist at UW ILABS examining the effect of  language and reading interventions on brain development. (Graduate Advisor: Ione Fine)
Bjorn Hubert-Wallander, after having introduced Geoff to the concept of ordering pizza in a video game, now uses qualitative and quantitative user research, experimental design, and expertise in human behavior to help create digital+physical products that bring tangible value to people’s lives. (Graduate Advisor: Geoffrey Boynton)
Fang Jiang is Associate Professor at University of Nevada, Reno. Her research examines relationship between brain structure and function/behaviors and the mechanisms underlying such relationship, with a particular emphasis on functional relevance of cross-modal responses consequent on sensory deprivation. She uses research methods including neuroimaging and behavioral measures. (Postdoc Advisor: Ione Fine)
Sung Jun Joo is Associate Professor at Pusan National University where he studies the neural bases of visual perception and cognition using both behavioral (psychophysics) and neuroimaging (fMRI, EEG, & MEG) measurements. (Graduate Advisor: Scott Murray)
Alex Kale is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Chicago. He creates and evaluate tools for helping people think with data, specializing in how data visualization can be used to support value judgments and reasoning with uncertainty. He leads the University of Chicago’s Data Cognition Lab, where they build analysis software that enables users to externalize their thinking when grappling with data-driven judgments. (Undergraduate Advisor: Scott Murray)
Miranda Johnson, PhD Miranda Johnson is a Data Scientist at Edwards Lifesciences where she uses her expertise in applied statistical analyses and quantitative techniques (Graduate Advisors: Geoffrey Boynton & John Palmer)

Tamar Kolodny is a Senior Lecturer at Ben-Gurion University of the NegevDepartment of Psychology where she examines the neural basis of ADHD. (Postdoctoral Advisor: Scott Murray)

Jeffrey Lin is Game Director & Creative Director of Ouro Interactive, you can read about his career here. (Graduate Advisors: Geoffrey Boynton, Scott Murray)
Kim Meier is an Assistant Professor at the College of Optometry at the University of Houston. Her work aims to understand how the visual parts of the brain typically develop, how this development is impacted when a person has prolonged atypical visual experience during childhood, and how perceptual abilities change as a function of treatment success.
Rachel Millin Rachel Millin is a Machine Learning engineer at Caption Health. She’s a data scientist strive to gain insights into human health and behavior from data, with the aim of developing products with positive impact. Expertise includes nachine learning: linear and logistic regression, SVM, and convolutional neural networks. (Postdoc Advisor: Scott Murray)

James (Kit) Moreland is a Senior Data Scientist at Policygenius. To our surprise (we’re not beard people) we kind of like his new beard. (Graduate Advisor: Geoffrey Boynton)

Erik Runeson is a Senior Quantitative Researcher at Netflix. (Graduate Advisor: Scott Murray, Geoffrey Boynton)
Michael-Paul Schallmo is Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota. His research examines visual dysfunction in clinical populations (e.g., schizophrenia, autism) using high field (3 and 7 tesla) functional MRI and MR spectroscopy, as well as EEG, visual psychophysics, and computational modeling. (Postdoc Advisor: Scott Murray)
Alicia Shen is Machine Learning Science Lead at Expedia Group where she leverages data intuition and machine learning skills to provide insights. We suspect she still identifies with Monty Python’s killer bunny because some things never change. (Graduate Advisor: Ione Fine)
Jessie Thomas is the Senior Business PM of Culture Programs at Microsoft. She uses her research training to design culturally transformative initiatives and employee programs rooted in behavioral neuroscience. She also oversees onboarding and learning efforts for Team Xbox, the Early in Career program, and an employee culture council. (Graduate Advisors: Ione Fine, Geoffrey Boynton)
Jason Webster is a Senior Fellow in Research at the Department of Radiology at UW. (Graduate Advisor: Ione Fine)
Alex White is Assistant Professor of Neuroscience at Barnard College, Collumbia where he examines how the human brain recognizes written words using a combination of behavioral assessments, eye-tracking, and functional MRI to record brain activity. (Postdoctoral Advisor: Geoffrey Boynton)
Ezgi Yucel has just graduated and has taken a position at Vivid Vision helping to build a vision care platform that works with new virtual reality technology.
