The SMDL lab welcomes two REU students from Heritage!

The Smart Medical Devices Lab at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) hosts two undergraduate research students (Maria Barrios – biology, Eric Mendoza – mechanical engineering) for 10 weeks during the 2022 summer. They are from Heritage University to participate in Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program and will gain access to ongoing resources, mentoring, and professional networks to support career paths in STEM. Students will receive professional development mentoring on applying to graduate programs and learn about research opportunities from early career professionals. The use of robots in health care has increased dramatically over the last decade. Students will examine the possibility of using the commercial robot UR3 from Universal Robots in conducting ultrasound examinations. This study will quantify the performance of the ultrasound system imaging testing various important parameters. The project title is “Automating a Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging Exam”.
