Principal Investigator

Jong Yoon, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the School of STEM at the University of Washington Bothell. He leads Smart Medical Devices Lab (SMDL) and his primary research focus is on the design and development of mechatronics systems and their applications in biomedical devices. Prior to joining UW Bothell School of STEM in 2014, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Qatar University, Qatar (2009-2014). From 1997 to 2001, he was with Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Korea, as a research engineer and designed various precision motors for information and optical devices.

He obtained his B.E. degree from Hong Ik University, Seoul, in 1995, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 2004 and 2009, respectively, all in mechanical engineering.

Dr. Jong Yoon is currently the program coordinator of the Mechanical Engineering program at UW Bothell and advises three student groups, ASME, Electric Motorsport, and Trickfire Robotics. The Trickfire robotics is a team of self-motivated UW Bothell undergraduate students and our students come from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds to collaborate with each other in a way that no classroom provides. Our team has competed in the NASA Lunabotics Engineering Competition (previously Mars RMC) since 2016, which is held at the NASA Kennedy Space Center, Florida, every year. The robotics team will start competing at the University Rover Challenge (Mars Exploration Competition) at Mars Desert Research Station, Hanksville, Utah from 2023. E-UWB (Electric Motorsport) team will compete in the annual Shell Eco-marathon Americas (Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis) competition each April (from 2024) to push new boundaries, encouraging innovation and novel approaches to achieving energy efficiency.
