REU Project Breaks Barriers and Finds Sweet Spot!

Two brilliant students from Heritage University, Eric Mendoza and Maria Barrios, successfully completed their REU project, “automating a diagnostic ultrasound imaging exam” for 10 weeks in 2022 summer under the supervision of Dr. Yoon. Maria is a senior student majoring in Biology with a minor in Psychology and Eric is pursuing a mechanical engineering major. They set out to create a collaborative robot  that can take safe and accurate ultrasounds of a person’s arm and identify their veins.  They successfully integrated a  UR3 (Universal Robotics) robot with a portable ultrasound machine (SonoSite, MicroMaxx ultrasound) and obtained the basic information needed for the automation of vascular imaging using the brachial vein as an example. The detailed story can be found at here.
