Principal Investigator
Jong Yoon, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the School of STEM at the University of Washington Bothell. Before joining UW Bothell in 2014, he was with the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Qatar University, Qatar (2009-2014). From 1997 to 2001, he worked as a research engineer at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Korea, where he designed various precision motors for information and optical devices.
He obtained his B.E. degree from Hong Ik University, Seoul, in 1995, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 2004 and 2009, respectively, all in mechanical engineering.
Dr. Jong Yoon currently advises three student groups. The TrickFire Robotics club is a team of self-motivated UW Bothell students who come from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds. From 2016 to 2021, our team participated in the NASA Robotic Mining Competition (Mars RMC), held annually at the Kennedy Space Center. Since 2023, the robotics team has competed in the University Rover Challenge at Mars Desert Research Station, Utah. UWB Eco car club competes in the annual Shell Eco-marathon Americas, held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis each April, aiming to push new boundaries and encourage innovation in energy efficiency. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) student chapter at the UW Bothell campus provides students with opportunities for professional development, networking, and participation in technical activities.
