UW BMES Winter-Quarter Newsletter

UW BMES is a student-run chapter of the Biomedical Engineering Society serving students, faculty, and staff in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington. We are a multi-faceted group providing social, wellness, outreach, mentorship, and
professional development resources. To keep up with UW BMES follow us on Facebook for event updates, Instagram for officer and event spotlights, and visit our website for our calendar and resources posted from events!

NEW BMES WEBSITE

BMES has a NEW website thanks to BMES Webmaster Josh. Check it out hereto stay updated on our calendar and resources posted from BMES events!

UW Bioengineering Resilience Project

UW BMES would like to foster a culture amongst students which prioritizes resilience and promotes growth in the face of failure and adversity. To do this, we created a resilience wall in the student lounge which displays stories of adversity, failure, and resilience submitted by our students, faculty and staff.

We invite you to check out the stories shared posted in the student lounge by our bioengineering community or click on the Wellness tab of our website!

Looking Back at Winter Quarter With BMES

Winter Quarter Outreach Training Workshop

In continuation with our quarterly outreach training workshops, the winter training was held by BMES Outreach Chair Hannah, where volunteers enjoyed some pizza and learned about the prosthetics, implants, and ultrasound modules. The Spring Outreach Training will be held towards the middle of April, so if you are interested in learning about the different modules we have to teach the community about bioengineering, feel free to drop by!

Resume Workshop

BMES Academic Chair Nate hosted Alice Kim, Associate Director at the Career Center at Engineering to help bioengineering students with writing a resume and tailoring it for engineering industry and academia.

Island School 4th Grade Visit to Foege

BMES Outreach Chair Hannah and UW Bioengineering partnered with The Island School to host a group of 4th graders to learn about bioengineering! With the help of many student volunteers, students learned about implants, ultrasound, and nanoparticle drug delivery.

If you are interested in volunteering in future outreach events, we will be working with the College of Engineering, the Pacific Science Center, and the Introduce a Girl Series to teach modules at many exciting events in Spring!

Physician Shadowing Program

BMES Medical Chair Renae led the entire physician shadowing program. Students were placed in contact with physicians from around the Seattle area, with the opportunity to observe what a career in medicine really means. This gave students the chance to clarify and refine their own career goals.

CrossLink Mentorship Outing

BMES CrossLink Mentorship Chair Becky organized an outing to Rick’s for ice-cream. Even though it was closed, the night turned into an outing to H-mart instead!

Chinook the BioE Therapy Dog Visits!

BMES Wellness Chair Diana invited Chinook to visit four times throughout the quarter including being Cupid on Valentine’s Day! He hung out in the student lounge waiting for students to stop by and pet him or play tug-o-war.

BioE Alumni Networking Night

Bioengineering students gathered to listen to a panel of BioE alumni discuss their path after graduation. BMES Academic Chair Nate hosted and facilitated the entire event!

Alumni from left to right: Tiffany Ohlsen (Just Biotheraputics), Anastasia Nicolov (Just Biotheraputics), Steven Postlewait (Kestra Medical Technologies), Yoshi Goto (Sound Bio)

Swing & Salsa – Intro to Social Dancing

To help prepare and hone your dance moves in time for the Ultraviolet Semiformal, BMES Wellness Chair Diana and CrossLink Chair Becky led a class in personalized instruction for all social dancing ability levels.

Ultraviolet! – BioE x ChemE Semiformal

BMES partnered with AIChE for our annual semiformal: Ultraviolet! The night was organized by BMES Social Chair Kara and included dancing, desserts, a live DJ, light drinks, and a radiant opportunity for the community to come together!

Sophomore Pre Core Informational Session

BMES VP of Social, Wellness, and Outreach Frances and Wellness Chair Diana teamed up to host a sophomore pre-core info session featuring Chetana, two Spring Core Professors, 10 BioE related RSO presentations, and 20+ BioE upperclassmen. Sophomores geared up for spring core and were advised on navigating the ins and outs of BioE!

Movie Night

After polling, Deadpool 2 was selected for BMES Movie Night hosted by Wellness Chair Diana! Provided with popcorn, five Costco pizzas, and other snacks, undergrad and grad students shared laughs as they watched this comedy together.

Sophomores go Karaoke!

From singing Sweet Caroline to Rap God and drinking some bubble tea, sophomores sang at Star Karaoke with BMES Sophomore Cohort Representative Grace! Look out for a Golden Garden bonfire, and perhaps catered breakfast before a BioE final!

Student Lounge Hearts

BMES wanted to show our love for all of our students this winter quarter by decorating the student lounge with hearts that have all of the undergraduate names on them, led by the initiative of BMES Student Store Officer Savannah. Make sure to go find your name on the wall!

Winter Merchandise and Spring Lockers

BMES Fundraising Chair Elli and Treasurer Sean organized newt hat and BioE mug sales. You can pick up yours beginning week 2 of the quarter. Stay tuned for times to pick up your order! We have a few extra newt hats and mugs available if you are still interested in purchasing.

If interested in renting a Foege locker to store your things, it costs $5 for the quarter! Please email BMES at bmes@uw.edu with “Sean Toulouie” in the subject line and Treasurer Sean will get back to you!

Upcoming Spring Quarter BMES Events

Last quarter the student store lost money on the snacks due to students not paying. This quarter we will attempt to buy snacks one more time, and if we do no break even snacks will be discontinued for the rest of the quarter. Please honor the snack system by paying cash either in the cash box or via our venmo @BMES-UW. Prices for each snack are listed on the board next to the cash box!
