Winter 2016 Registration – Advising note for CEE majors

Hello CEE Majors:

Get ready for Winter Quarter registration!    For graduating seniors who have applied to graduate in 2016 (autumn through summer quarter), Graduating Senior Priority (GSP) registration begins tomorrow, Friday, November 6.   Everyone else starts registering the following week.  Please check MyUW for your specific registration day.

The Winter Quarter Time Schedule is online at: http://www.washington.edu/students/timeschd/WIN2016/cee.html.

As a CEE major, you will be able to register on your own via MyUW without add codes for CEE courses provided that you have prerequisite courses which are recognized by and are in the UW system.  If you experience registration difficulties, request an add code at www.tinyurl.com/ceeaddcodes.

Read on to see more information about your class.

CEE Freshmen/Sophomores:  If you have not yet taken CEE 100 (1 credit, CR/NC), please plan to take it in winter quarter.   Sophomores: If you have completed your math, science, and engineering fundamental courses, you are eligible to start on your 300-level CEE courses of your choice; but you should have an academic plan that you have developed with Brian or me to be sure that the course work is timely and appropriate.   A sample 4-year plan is available on the attached BSCE degree sheet (see page 2).

IMPORTANT:  It is very important for freshman and sophomores to develop a long-term academic plan.  Please plan meet with Brian or I and have your academic plan entered on MyPlan (accessible via MyUW).

CEE Juniors:   You should know which Track you are assigned to (Track I or II), so please be sure to register for the appropriate Track courses for winter quarter.  Please stay with your Track courses to avoid problems (unless you have worked out an individualized graduation plan with a CEE advisor.

(IMPORTANT:  If you are interested in Structural Engineering in any way, please plan to take CEE 456 Structural Analysis in spring quarter.)

CEE Seniors:   As most of you have now applied for graduation, you should know what courses you need in the remaining quarters to complete your major/minor requirements.  If you have not applied for graduation, please complete the graduation application online form at https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/ceadvice/39872.   Since we are all done with group sessions, you will need to schedule an individual appointment with one of us and indicate that it is to apply for graduation.   (Please note:  It is too late to apply for GSP for winter quarter, so please don’t ask about that at this last date.)

Projected course offerings and preliminary CEE Time Schedule: The projected CEE course offerings and preliminary time schedule for future quarters are on the CEE Website athttp://www.ce.washington.edu/students/timeschedule.html.  These are our working documents provided for your convenience, but they are subject to change without notice.

If you have problems registering for a course:

1)  First check to see if you have satisfied the course prerequisites. You may have problems registering if you did not have your most recent transfer transcript sent to the UW so you are missing required prerequisite courses; if you were you conditionally admitted and do not yet have CIV E major status; or if you are a postbac student whose prerequisite courses have not been evaluated and coded yet.

2)  If the course you need is a CEE course, then submit an add code request using the online request form: www.tinyurl.com/ceeaddcodes.  If you are trying to register for a course from another department, please contact the respective department for registration assistance and/or add codes.

If you are “off track” or you were admitted conditionally, you need to meet with me or Brian to develop an individualized graduation plan if you have not done so already.  Please write or call to schedule an appointment.  (When writing an email, please be sure to include your full name, UW ID number, and let me know when you are available to meet).

The BSCE Advising Handbook is available online at http://www.ce.washington.edu/students/undergrad.html.  The BSCE degree sheet is attached for your quick reference.

At the end of this email are answers to some frequently asked questions regarding winter quarter registration.

Best,
Mariko

>>>>>>> FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS <<<<<<<<

Q.  “Does it matter when I register for CEE courses? IIs it important to register on or near my designated registration date?”

A.  Yes, CEE majors get first priority for CEE courses during registration Period I.  Starting registration Period II, non-majors have access to CEE courses on a space-available basis.  If you don’t register on time, you can get locked out of your preferred lab section or out of the required course entirely. (For more information on registration priority periods, see  http://www.washington.edu/students/reg/addpolicy.html.)

Q.  “I have a block on my registration due to having too many credits earned.  What do I do?”

A.  If you have applied for graduation, this block should be removed. If not, write to ceadvice@uw.edu with your full name and UW ID number and let me know of your situation.  We can submit a petition to remove your registration block.  If you have more than 210 credits and exceeded the number of quarters allowed at the UW (as per the new UW Continuation Policy Guidelines), you must have an approved graduation plan in MyUW to remove the block.

 Q.  Post-baccalaureate issue:  “None of my previous courses are showing up on my degree audit — why?  Will I be able to register?”

A.  Postbac course evaluations and degree audit coding are done manually by the departmental advisor, with no assistance from the UW Admissions Office, so this is a time-consuming task.   Generally, as a postbac, your general education requirements for the UW will have been satisfied by your previous degree. So all you need to focus on are the specific requirements for the BSCE degree.  We are continuously working on evaluating and coding your degree audits. If you encounter problems in the meantime, please request add codes if your prerequisite courses are not on the UW System.

Q.  Transfer issue:  “I took the second CHEM class at a CC, but it’s not satisfying the CHEM 152 requirement — why?  Do I have to repeat it?”

A.  Some transfer courses require course equivalency evaluations by faculty or by the respective academic department — but don’t worry about the second CHEM course.  In this case, we are only looking for the second course after the CHEM 142 equivalent, so I will be coding this over the next several weeks/months.  Your patience will be appreciated.  It’s all manual work.

Q. “When are drop-in advising hours?”   “How do I make an appointment?”

A.  For drop-in advising, see calendar on http://www.ce.washington.edu/students/undergrad.html.  For links to Mariko and Brian’s appointment calendars, see right hand box on this webpage.   (Please log in with your Google account and have your calendar set to Pacific Time.)  If you have trouble with the appointment tool, write to ceadvice@uw.edu with your preferred days/times.
