Apply for 2017-2018 Scholarships online! (April 1-May 1)

This note is for CEE majors continuing as undergraduates in the 2017-2018 year.

Apply for 2017-2018 CEE scholarships between April 1 – May 1.

The CEE Department accepts scholarship applications once a year, between April 1 through May 1, for the following academic year awards. For more information and to apply online, visit the College of Engineering scholarship application information website.

CEE majors will be considered for a variety of departmental scholarships, including need- and merit-based awards as well as those with special criteria (such as interest in a specific area of study, leadership/research experience, home state, etc.), so don’t be afraid to show your interests, merits, and needs.  The CEE Department annually awards nearly 30 scholarships in varying amounts. The online CEE scholarship application is not intended for students seeking funding for graduate education.

To be eligible for need-based scholarships or to seek state and/or federal financial aid, you must submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application.  For more information, go to the UW Student Financial Aid Office, or visit www.fafsa.gov.

Scholarships are also available through the University’s Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships, and Awards for those interested in highly competitive local, national, and international awards.

Here are some hints for improving your chances for a CEE scholarship award.

    • Prepare a personal statement specific to seeking a scholarship.  You’ll be surprised how many students simply regurgitate a personal statement used for UW or CEE admissions and address why they want to be a Husky or to study CEE.  Don’t recycle your old admissions application personal statement.
  • You can talk about your professional and academic goals, your engineering areas of interest, your internship, research, and/or service experience, among other things.
  • You can address why you need funding or what the funding will enable you to do.  Give specific information.  (E.g., “ I regularly work 18 hours a week to support myself, and scholarship funding will allow me to work fewer hours so I can focus more  on school.”)
  • If you have experienced difficulties or challenges that have affected your academic performance, please feel free address them (but do not use the engineering scholarship application to simply reiterate a long history of personal hardships.)  Talk about what the funding will mean to you, what it will allow you to do or not do.
  • Freshmen and sophomores: It’s okay if you don’t have specific CEE-related activities or experience!  Share your interests and goals.
