Upcoming Faculty Lectures

Please join us this Thursday 5/21 via Zoom to hear CEE’s very own Tim Larson speak about airports, air quality, and public health. Also check out the two final talks of the quarter, in the weeks following Tim’s.

Studies of Airborne Ultra-Ultrafine Particles Near Several Airports

Professor Timothy Larson

Airborne ‘ultrafine’ particles are those less than 0.1 micrometers in diameter and are emitted by a variety of combustion sources, most notably diesel engines. Even though they comprise the majority of the number of airborne particles per volume of air, due to their small size their collective mass is small and does not contribute much to PM2.5, the mass-based particle metric regulated worldwide.    In recent years, there has been accumulating evidence that an even smaller subset of ultrafine particles are also emitted by jet aircraft.  These “ultra-ultrafine” particles can be found in elevated numbers downwind of major airports, raising questions about potential public health impacts.   We will share our own collaborative studies of this phenomena near Sea-Tac Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.  We will also discuss a recent epidemiological study in Los Angeles looking at associations between ultra-ultrafine particle concentrations and pre-term birth outcomes.

Coming up in following weeks:

  • Thursday, May 28th:  Asst. Prof. Amy Kim speaks on Human-centric strategies for the built environment:  http://depts.washington.edu/watersem/seminar2020_Kim.html
  • Thursday, June 4th:  Prof. David Whiteman speaks on A Meteorological conundrum:  Ice mushrooms on summits in Patagonia.
