APWA Panel: SR 520 on Mar 10

This Wednesday, March 10th at 4:00 PM the American Public Works Association will be holding a panel and networking event.  The event will be an overview and discussion of the SR 520 Project near the Montlake Lid in Seattle featuring speakers on the construction, environmental impacts, permitting, and history of this landmark project.

Joining us as panelists are Dave Becher (WSDOT), John Welch (Graham), Gary Stensland (PBS Engineering), Julia Mackey (WSDOT), and Steve Peer (WSDOT).   Check out the below bios to learn about our speakers.

Dave Becher graduated from University of Illinois with a BS and MS in Civil Engineering, is a licensed Profession Engineer, and has been with WSDOT for 27 years, currently serving as WSDOT’s SR 520 Director of Construction. Dave was recently named one of Engineering News-Record’s “Top 25 Newsmakers of the Year” in the country, a significant nationwide honor and recognition of his work and accomplishments.

John Welch graduated from The University of Washington with a B.S. in Construction Management. He’s has 34 years of construction experience specializing in heavy civil projects.  John is currently the Project Director for Graham Contracting on the SR 520 Montlake Project.

Gary Stensland graduated from the University of Buffalo with a BA in Environmental Studies, is a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) and has 34 years of environmental consulting experience.  Gary is currently a Principal with PBS Engineering and Environmental Inc. and is the Design-Builder’s Environmental Compliance Manager on the SR 520 Montlake Project.

Julia Mackey graduated from University of Alaska Anchorage with B.S. in Civil Engineering. She started her career with WSDOT two years ago. Currently, she is working as a Transportation Engineer in an Inspector role on the SR 520 Program.

 Steve Peer graduated from Western Illinois University with a B.A. in Public Communication and Human Relations. He has been in Public Information with WSDOT for 13 years – first as a consultant for WSDOT’s I-405 Program and Kiewit/General/Manson and now as the SR 520 Media and Construction Communications Manager.
