Providing Constructive Criticism to Instructors through End of Course Evaluations

Dear CEE Community,

Over the past year, our department has begun to assess our efforts regarding Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.  A troubling theme of receiving abusive or hateful written feedback from students on end-of-quarter course evaluations has emerged amongst female, BIPOC and non-native English speaking instructors and TA’s. As we start distributing course evaluations for winter quarter, please:
  • Remember that instructors read all written feedback they receive about their teaching and take it quite seriously. Your comments do not go into a vacuum.
  • Giving your constructive criticism is important, helpful and appreciated.
  • Using insults, derogatory language, or comments about appearance, ethnicity and gender is inappropriate.
  • Keep in mind not only what you intend to express, but also how your feedback might be perceived when it is received.
If you have concerns feel free to reach out to the CEE advising team, and we would be happy to discuss them.
