Environmental Stewardship Scholarships

Three to four scholarships, valued at $1,200-$1,500 each, will be awarded by PNCWA this year. At a minimum one scholarship will be dedicated for PNCWA-affiliated members and/or their dependents. Scholarship applications are encouraged from, and PNCWA will strive to award scholarships to, students attending both 2- and 4-year institutions and pursuing Associates, Bachelors, and/or Master’s degrees.

2015 PNCWA Scholarship Instructions and Criteria for Applicants

Instructions for Applicants. To apply for a scholarship:

1.        Complete all pages of the Application. Be sure to type or print neatly. It is very                     important that you do not leave any blanks on the application.

2.        Include a letter verifying enrollment or acceptance in a college (2- or 4-year school)            water, wastewater, or environmental related program on college letterhead. If you                are a high school student that has not yet received acceptance, you will need to list            where you have applied.

3.        Attach an official transcript (if you are a currently enrolled college student).

4.        Attach requested essays and recommendation/reference letters.

5.        Complete application shall be postmarked/faxed no later than May 22, 2015.                        Awards will be announced by June 30.

7.        All applicants must be residents of Idaho, Oregon, or Washington and also must be            U.S. citizens.

PNCWA Environmental Stewardship Scholarship

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • For applicants to be considered as being affiliated with PNCWA, the applicant or an immediate family member of the applicant must be a PNCWA member (WEF/PNCWA or PNCWA-only member). Qualifying Members must have been a member in good standing of PNCWA for at least one year.
  • The applicant must enroll as a full-time college student (by September of the award year) that allows them to pursue a professional career (e.g., engineer, operator, lab analyst) in the water environment field.

2015 PNCWA Scholarship Policies and Procedures

1.   Applications must be accompanied by:

a. Official Transcript (copies not accepted)
b. Required Essay (or Essays if you are a prior PNCWA award recipient)
c. Verification Letter (See Instructions for Applicants)
d. Reference/Recommendation Letters—a minimum of two letters of recommendation: one must be from a teacher or professor, the other must be from someone not related to the applicant.

2.   Applicants submit their scholarship applications to the PNCWA Association Manager who will verify if the  applicant or sponsoring family member is a member in good standing (if applicable) in the PNCWA and then will forward the applications to the Scholarship Committee for review.

3.  To be eligible for a scholarship, the student must meet the criteria outlined in the Instructions for Applicants, listed above in “Instructions for Applicants.”

4. Selection Criteria:

a. Career Objectives and Environmental Interest Essay
b. Academic Potential: Grade Point Average and type/difficulty of courses taken
c. Extracurricular Activities: Demonstrating leadership in programs and organizations
d. Letters of Recommendation/Reference
e. Experience pertaining to or related to the water/wastewater/environmental field
f. Award Renewal (Essay): Applicants that have previously received a PNCWA scholarship shall submit an essay describing how they used the financial support, how they are progressing toward their degree, and how their degree path aligns with the water/wastewater/environmental field. Receipt of a previous PNCWA scholarship does not guarantee renewal of an award.

5. Applications are reviewed by three to five individuals, as selected by the Scholarship Chair.  The Scholarship Committee nominates students for scholarships to the PNCWA Board.

6. Once the nominees are accepted by the Board, the PNCWA Manager will notify each applicant by letter or e-mail.

7. To indicate that they have accepted the scholarship, Recipients must sign and return the “Terms of Scholarship.”

8. Recipient will be eligible to receive awards in subsequent years.

9. Successful applicants will be awarded their Scholarship by a PNCWA representative.

10. Successful applicants will be granted a complimentary conference registration to the annual conference and will be encouraged to attend the opening ceremony to receive the scholarship. The PNCWA2015 Annual Conference will be held at the Boise Centre in Boise, ID, with the opening ceremony from 8 AM–10 AM on Monday, October 26, 2015.

11. Funds will be released directly to the Recipient only after an acceptable copy of a Bursar’s receipt for attendance of an accredited institution is received.

12. A complimentary student membership in the Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association will be awarded to the Recipient if they are not currently a member.
