Bridges, a Tale of Scale: Bridges are a critical link in our transportation infrastructure, but they are often taken for granted. Perhaps to exact retribution, but to certainly remind us of their importance, one occasionally fails. In this presentation, we will look at some of the science and art that underlie bridge design and construction, and address some issues that constrain improvements and others that have led to major developments. Like many technological developments, progress has not been smooth and continuous, but rather has been driven by some specific intermittent discoveries, by changes in the demands of society, and by the genius and persistence of some remarkable individuals.
Light refreshments to follow lecture. No RSVP required.
