Job Opportunity with the City of Ellensburg

The City of Ellensburg has a current vacancy for a civil engineer position. In this position you would complete project specific design and cost estimates, prepare and administer plans, specifications and contract documents for Utility, LID, SID, and street improvement projects. Construction engineering, project management and supervision. Processing files, records, payments and closure of all assigned projects. Assisting in consultant selection, plan and specification review, field survey work, permit applications, grant applications, traffic signal system and video operation, computer design, and supervision of technical personnel are also part of the job description.

Qualification Requirements

  • Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or closely related field from an accredited university.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Engineer in Training Certificate must be attained within 6 months of employment; First Aid/CPR Certification.
  • Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (A) Considerable knowledge of surveying, inspection, and implementation of contracts, plans and documents; working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in survey and other engineering work. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. (B) Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment. (C) Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to observe proper safety precautions; Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public; Ability to perform certain engineering tasks under varying weather conditions. Ability to work from construction specifications or blueprints.
  • Special Requirements: Valid State Driver’s license, or ability to obtain one; must maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Tools and Equipment Used: General office equipment, Blue print copier, computers including Auto CAD and, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Micro film reader, Planimeter, computer printer, calculator, hand level, tape measures, chains, rolling scale, two way radio, binding machine, level, EDM, field rods, construction level, laser level, point markers, vehicle mounted measuring device.
