Check out these two new CEE 498 courses that will be offered in SUM20. 2019-20 CEE Projected Course Offerings

Both of these courses will be offered online and taught by Julian Yamaura. In addition, both courses can satisfy either Technical Electives (Construction Core) or Upper Division Engineering & Science Electives.

CEE 498: Special Topics – Design and Construction of Temporary Structures (3)

Prerequisites: CEE 307 and CEE 337. (AutoCAD (CEE 291) experience preferred but not required.)
This course focuses on the design and analysis of temporary structure systems used on heavy civil projects. Course covers the design, analysis, and construction means and methods for scaffolding, formwork, shoring, and falsework systems.

Specific learning objectives include:

  • Understand the different types of temporary structures used on heavy civil projects
  • Gain experience using national design standard documents for various types of materials
  • Gain experience using a beam analysis software
  • Design and analyze concrete formwork for various elements of a concrete girder bridge
  • Understand construction means and methods used to assemble and disassemble temporary structures

CEE 498: Special Topics – Project Estimating (3)

Prerequisites: CEE 307 and CEE 337.

This course presents the basic principles of estimating the time and cost of construction projects. Course focus is on the thought process that is required for construction engineers to analyze job conditions and assess the required labor, equipment, and methods of construction that will be necessary to perform the work.

Specific learning objectives include:

  • Gain experience in understanding and applying information in contract drawings, specifications, and other project reference documents
  • Understand differences between estimates prepared throughout the various stages of the project lifecycle
  • Understand the procedures and data/information necessary to put together estimates 
  • Practice assembling approximate and detailed estimates
  • Gain experience using software to perform quantity takeoffs and organize bid estimates
