Parents are so important when it comes to guiding their teens toward healthy behaviors and protecting them from problems like using marijuana, alcohol or other substances before they are 21. Middle school is an important time for prevention because kids who use substances like alcohol and marijuana usually start in high school. Thankfully, there are many effective resources for parents that help them talk with their children and set goals and guidelines that help their teens avoid using alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana until they are older.  Now that marijuana is legal for adults in many places, some parents are using marijuana and the resources for parents of teens don’t usually take that into account.

The Communicating with your Teen Study is an online survey of parents who use marijuana. We are looking for parents who use marijuana and who have a child in middle school (grades 5-7, ages 11-14).  We want to hear how you have talked about marijuana with your child, what challenges you have had doing that, and the ways you have overcome any obstacles to talking about marijuana with your teen. We want your opinions and ideas.  By completing our online survey, you will help improve resources for parents and reduce underage substance use!

What kind of questions are on the survey?

The survey will ask you about conversations you have already had with your middle schooler about marijuana, who started the conversation or how the topic came up, and how it went. The survey will also ask about your own use of marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco, overall parenting style, how you talk with your teen about other topics such as setting rules and consequences, and about your overall relationship with your child.

Here are some examples of the most personal questions we will ask:

How often have you used marijuana in the past month?

How close do you feel to your child?

What have you said to your teen about marijuana and how did that go?

Will I receive payment?

Yes, you will receive a check for $30 made out to your name, which we will send to an a valid mailing address you provide. Please only take the survey once.
