What is the Communicating with Your Teen Study?

Communicating with Your Teen is an online survey of parents of middle school children who regularly use marijuana. It asks them about their communication with their teen around marijuana, their own substance use, and general parenting styles. Researchers involved in this study will use survey answers to guide resource development to best address concerns of parents who use marijuana and other substances while helping them protect their children from underage use of marijuana and other substances. This is a one-time survey done online.

Who funds this study?

The study is funded by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute at the University of Washington.

How long is the survey?

We expect the survey to take approximately 30 minutes to complete. During the survey, you may skip any questions you do not wish to answer.

Can I take the survey more than once?

Unfortunately, no. We are looking to figure out how parents handle decisions in the new age of legal marijuana. Taking the survey more than once will only dilute our findings.

Should I be concerned about my privacy?

Your privacy is very important to us. We will keep your answers confidential. We will ask you will provide your legal name and a valid mailing address, where we can send your payment. Only members of the research team will have access to the data, which will be stored in a secure location on University of Washington servers under password protection. Your name and address will be stored separately from and not linked to your data.

Can I see the survey?

Yes. If you are interested in seeing a full list of survey questions, please contact us.
