DEPARTMENT NEWS

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR: Kamran Moinzadeh

As we wrap up the last days of 2015, I’d like to summarize some of the news and accomplishments that we all achieved together at ISOM.  To begin, on the recruiting front, we successfully recruited two excellent colleagues, Elina Hwang and Masha Shunko who both joined us in Fall.  We also promoted Hamed Mamani to Associate Professor with tenure.  On the program side, MS in Information Systems (MSIS), has been doing great! Over 400 applicants applied for admissions to the program and only a select 33 students were admitted, joining the program in summer quarter 2015.  Our newest program, MS in Supply Chain Management (MSCM) program, approved in January of 2015, is preparing for its first cohort in Summer 2016.  Our UG concentrations in IS and OM are very popular among the students with enrollments of 271 and 135 students, respectively.  On the teaching side, ISOM faculty won many major teaching awards,  including the prestigious Bowen Award, Dean’s Graduate Teaching Award, GEMBA Excellence in Teaching, MBA Professor of the Quarter, TMMBA Professor of the Quarter, Undergraduate Teaching Professor of the Quarter, and Undergraduate Faculty of the Year.  On the research front, we had a very productive year with 15 top-tier publications.  Our faculty are now on the editorial boards of ISR, OR, MS, JMIS and POM, all major journals (A journals) in the IS and OM area.  Furthermore, Yong Tan was named the prestigious Chang Jiang Scholar by the Chinese Ministry of Education and Hong Kong Li Ka Shing Foundation, another testimony to his scholarly and impactful research in the Information Systems area.  Our Ph.D. recruitment went very well in 2015 as we had 5 students join ISOM.  There are many more accomplishments, but I think these will give all of us a good idea about our impact at Foster and in our professional communities.

STUDENT CLUBS

Business Information Technology Society

(BITS)

The Business Information Technology Society started off the academic year by co-hosting a waterfront networking dinner with Ernst & Young.  They also welcomed PwC, BITS alumnae Eric Ing from the Boeing IT rotational, and the Foster MSIS class.  The Autumn quarter ended with an engaging visit from Zillow, whose office BITS plans to visit in the upcoming quarter.

Operations & Supply Chain Management Club

(OSCM)

The 3rd Annual Boeing Northwest Business Case Competition was held at Paccar Hall during the Autumn Quarter.  University of Washington sent eight teams to compete against teams from Central Washington University, Western Washington University, and Portland State University. The students competed in front of Boeing senior executives for a VIP tour of the Boeing Renton Factory and guaranteed interviews for select positions.  Teams are given real-world business scenarios from Boeing’s Defense division and must come up with their best solution in two short weeks.  The focus was on supply chain, lean, and finance.  The final winning team from UW included: Gurman Tiwana, Kelly Suyama, Hekang Wu, Ipshita Sharma, and Cristal McClure.  Prof. Shi Chen attended as the UW faculty representative throughout the competition.
The OSCM club had a field trip to Carlisle’s Interconnect facilities in Kent, WA on November 18, 2015 (pictured above.)  They spent the day applying kaizen techniques to manufacturing operations.  The quarter ended with the club’s highest event attendance to date, impressing the Director of Engineering at UPS and promising stronger relations between UPS and Foster next year!
