THE STRUCTURAL MODELING AND MACHINE LEARNING APPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH ON TECHNOLOGY (S.M.A.R.T) WORKSHOP

The 3rd annual S.M.A.R.T Workshop was hosted by the ISOM Department at the University of Washington, Foster School of Business. The purpose of the workshop is to introduce doctoral students and researchers to structural modeling methods. The aim of the workshop is also to open up common ground for future discussions between colleagues across schools who use or wish to use structural modeling methods in information systems research.

The S.M.A.R.T Workshop attendees were treated to an Argosy Cruise dinner around Lake Washington.
Prof. Yong Tan not only served as the workshop faculty director, but was the temporary captain of the Argosy vessel thanks to the kindness of Captain Karen Allred.
ISOM-AMAZON RESEARCH WORKSHOP

This one-day joint research workshop brought together department faculty and several Amazon research groups (that work on inventory and supply chain, operations execution, etc.) During the workshop ISOM faculty and Amazon researchers presented current work and discussed overlapping interests and possible future collaboration. The workshop was organized by Professors YONG-PIN ZHOU and KAMRAN MOINZADEH.
Dean Jim Jiambalvo delivered the opening remarks to the workshop attendees.
USTC – UW INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL BUSINESS AND FINANCIAL INNOVATION
The USTC-UW Institute for Global Business and Finance Innovation officially opened its offices in May of 2017. During the Summer Quarter, the institute hosted seven USTC visiting scholars for joint research programs and seven undergraduate students for a summer research internship. Many ISOM faculty served as hosts and advisors. During their stay, the USTC visitors participated in collaborative research projects and attended the Structural Modeling and Machine Learning Applications for Research on Technology Workshop (pictured below) as well as the 1st ISOM-Amazon Research Workshop. The USTC-UW Institute was one of the sponsors of the S.M.A.R.T Workshop.
Prof. ANDY SIEGEL was interviewed by Wall Street Journal columnist Jo Craven McGinty on August 25th. The column entitled, “Is Money in the Bank Always the Smarter Bet? For a homeowner, a fat savings account might indicate it’s time to weigh other options for that cash”. The article discusses the issue of when is it better to pay down a mortgage rather than keep cash in a savings account.

SHI CHEN visited with faculty and students at the Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management department, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on August 23-25, 2017.
MARK HILLIER
Was invited to present a lecture at the Foster Young Women’s Leadership Summit on quantitative methods and modeling on July 12, 2017. The Foster Young Women’s Leadership Summit is a three-day program for 28 rising high school juniors and seniors interested in exploring business, with a focus on exposing students to the fields of finance, information systems, and operations & supply chain management. This program is meant to teach young women about the field of business through hands-on experiences and interactions with faculty and students.

Was invited to present at the UW Foster School of Business Bridge B² program during the Supply Chain 101 Workshop on Friday September 8, 2017.
JINYANG ZHENG successfully defended his dissertation on July 24, 2017. His presentation was entitled “Understand Online Two-Sided Market: An Empirical Perspective.”

ARAVINDA GARIMELLA and BEHNAZ GHAHESTANI BOJD were invited to participate in in the AMCIS 2017: MISQ Author Development Workshop, held in Boston on August 10-12, 2017.
SAREH NABI-ABDOLYOUSEFI was accepted to the Young-Scholars Workshop at MIT, Sloan School of Management on July 12 – 14, 2017. The goal of the conference is to bring together researchers with a common interest in the intersection of human behavior and operations, with the aim of sharing current work, fostering research development and developing relationships among scholars in the field. Ms. Nabi-Abdolyousefi presented her paper (co-authored with HAMED MAMANI and D. Simchi-Levi) entitled, “Dynamic Pricing in the Presence of Strategic Behavior using Thompson Sampling.”

The Master of Science in Information Systems program welcomed 46 new students during the June orientation and they have now completed their first term. This year’s cohort comes with an average of four years of work experience, with backgrounds in technology, engineering, and finance. This academic year, MSIS is partnering with MSCM to host a spring study abroad tour. This immersion experience will feature students from both disciplines traveling to Amsterdam and Barcelona to explore business and culture first-hand through personal meetings with technology executives, company visits, and cultural excursions.
Summer was a busy time for the Master of Supply Chain Management program! The first cohort graduated in June and the next class started one week later. In June, the second MSCM cohort officially kicked off their program during the Week of Welcome orientation. Students got to know their classmates, learned about building high-performing teams, and gained the knowledge, skills and resources needed to be successful during the program. The class of 42 students come from diverse backgrounds and have 4.7 years of work experience on average.

KATHY WONG
Kathy is the new Recruiting and Admissions Administrator for the MSCM Program. Before joining Foster, she was an international student adviser in the UW-ISS Office. She also worked for several years with the MSIM Program at the Information School when it was getting off the ground. Kathy holds a B.A. in Psychology from the UW and an M.Ed. in Student Development Administration from Seattle University.
