Git Summer Camp: July – August 2023

Git Summer Camp is starting the week of July 10.

Branch out your skills this summer with Git Summer Camp! We’re packing our backpacks and heading to camp to work our way through two great LinkedIn Learning courses: Git from Scratch and Git Essential Training.

We’ve designed this to be a low-commitment summer camp where you’ll work your way through the courses on your own. We’ll communicate and collaborate via a Teams channel throughout the Git Summer Camp (in other words, no scheduled meetings, except for two optional drop-in office hours). Camp runs from July 10 through August 18. See the full schedule below.

We’ll send out messages via the Teams channel with reminders about milestones and questions/prompts to foster discussion relevant to the study path. Once you sign up, you’ll get more info about the Teams channel.

Good to know

  • Some Git experience is a bonus, but not required.
  • Some experience with command line interface (CLI) is helpful but not required.
  • As a member of the UW community, you have free access to LinkedIn Learning.
  • You’ll need to review the videos during the timeframe outlined on the Camp schedule. You’re also encouraged to check in via the Teams channel by the end of each segment.

Camp Schedule

WEEK 1

July 10-14

We’ll set up base camp with Git From Scratch. Our instructor, Morten Rand-Hendriskon, leads us through Git concepts via LEGOs! It’s a creative and quick way to get going with Git concepts.

WEEK 2

July 17-21

This week we head out on the trail with the first two segments of Git Essential Training. Our instructor, Barbara Forbes, leads us through Git concepts with some traditional graphics and visuals (as opposed to the LEGO examples from the Git from Scratch course).

Video duration: 18 minutes, plus quizzes

Teams office hours: Friday, July 21 at 11 a.m.

Teams check-in: By end of day Friday, July 21

WEEKS 3 & 4

July 24-August 4

Git Essential Training gets more hands-on in Lessons 3 and 4. Kind of like setting up a tent, we’ll learn how to install and configure Git. We’ll also push code from a sample repo to GitHub.

Video duration: 28 minutes, plus quizzes and a challenge exercise

Teams office hours: Friday, July 28 at 11 a.m.

Teams check-in: By end of day Friday, August 4

WEEKS 5 & 6

August 7-18

It gets even more interesting in Lessons 5 and 6 of Git Essential Training as we continue on the trail to the peak. We’ll make changes to files and learn how to ask Git what changed. We’ll also solidify several important Git concepts.

Video duration: 34 minutes, plus quizzes and a challenge exercise

Teams office hours: Friday, August 11 at 11 a.m.

Teams check-in: By end of day Friday, August 18
