OR INFECTION CONTROL

This has been our interest for a number of years which was heightened recently by participation in the writing committee for the expert guidance on infection prevention published by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) in 2018. Dr. Patch Dellinger and Dr. Andrew Bowdle participated in this effort. We had already implemented a number of the recommendations of the expert guidance, including the use of closed injection ports, isopropyl alcohol caps on injection ports, single-use laryngoscopes, and an arterial line placement bundle. There is much work remaining to be done in this area.  Dr. Pingping Song is working to implement double gloving for airway management, which is another recommendation from the SHEA guidance document.  Dr. Dustin Long is a critical care specialist in our department, who is becoming trained in bacterial genomics and will lead many of our efforts in the future. We are currently very interested in personal, wearable gel dispensers, which have been shown to reduce perioperative infection but are not commercially available.
