Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) Resources

DCM’s Animal Resources Program is the central provider of laboratory animal care at the University of Washington for all species other than non-human primates.

Animal Operations (AOps) System

AOps is a web-based animal management system that is fully integrated with HoverBoard, our electronic IACUC protocol management system. Researchers can utilize AOps for a variety of services, including animal orders, transfers, invoicing and payment of per diems.

Aquatic Animal Resources

The purchase and transfer of aquatic animals is not always managed through AOps. Learn more about these processes at the link above.

Gnotobiotic Animal Core (GNAC)

The Gnotobiotic Animal Core (GNAC) is a core facility managed by the Department of Comparative Medicine.  Located in the UW Health Sciences Center, the GNAC is open to investigators with research needs to maintain mice free of any microorganisms (germ-free), or with a known population of microorganisms (gnotobiotic).

In Vivo Services (IVS) Core

The In Vivo Services (IVS) Core in the Department of Comparative Medicine provides rodent colony management at the UW. IVS staff will oversee the maintenance, breeding, weaning, identification, and record keeping of your mouse and rat colonies to free up the limited and valuable time of your laboratory personnel. In addition, the IVS Core offers an array of technical services performing procedures such as sample collection, sample administration, and testing of drug compounds in rodents. All services through the IVS Core are charged on an hourly tech time rate.

Rodent Health Monitoring Program (RHMP)

The RHMP surveils and maintains the specific pathogen free status of rodent housing facilities at the University of Washington, including oversight of rodent imports and exports.

Shared Rodent Service

Fantastic (and free!) service that connects researchers that have or need mice or rats with one another.

Transgenic Resources Program (TRP)

The Transgenic Resources Program (TRP) is a core facility that creates transgenic and gene-targeted mice using pronuclear microinjection, targeted ES cell microinjection, and CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing (see UW Mouse CRISPR Core).  The TRP also offers mouse rederivation services to create specific pathogen free mice or to rederive cryopreserved mouse lines.  Additionally, embryo and sperm cryopreservation services are available to provide long-term storage of valuable mouse strains or stocks.

UW BSL- 3/ABSL-3 Facility

The Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM)-managed BSL-3/ABSL-3 facility is a state-of-the-art high containment research facility designed for both in vitro and in vivo research requiring biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) containment, including work with select agents.  Research conducted within the facility furthers the understanding and development of vaccines, diagnostics, and treatments for potentially life-threatening infectious diseases.  The facility is available for use by UW investigators as well as external institutions.

UW Mouse CRISPR Core (UWMCC)

The University of Washington Mouse CRISPR Core (UWMCC) is a cost center administered through the Department of Comparative Medicine. The UWMCC is a full-service facility offering rapid, precise, and economical generation of novel transgenic mouse models using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology. Our standard service includes consultation, design, testing, preparation, mouse embryo microinjection, and genotyping, all at a competitive price point. The UWMCC is a joint collaboration utilizing 15 years of gene-editing experience by the UW Transgenic Resources Program, the UW Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, and the Vector and Transgenic Mouse Core of the UW Diabetes Research Center.

Veterinary Services

Veterinary Services provides clinical care to animals in the University’s care and assists research groups with protocol development and procedure refinement.
