The PI is an individual who is designated and given the authority by a University department, school, or administrative unit to direct the research program or project. The PI provides the scientific and technical direction for the research.

Every Principal Investigator with an IACUC protocol is assigned a Scientific Liaison. Your Scientific Liaison is your primary point of contact within OAW, and can help you with grant and protocol items as well as wide range of other animal related topics.
can help you with the following items:

  • Training in HoverBoard, our electronic IACUC protocol management system.
  • Pre-review of IACUC protocols and follow-on submissions.
  • Shepherding protocol items through the IACUC review process.
  • Grant/protocol congruence review for all grants and contracts that involve animal use.
  • Periodic meetings to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Updating you about relevant changes to regulatory requirements and IACUC policies.
  • General point of contact for all things animal related. Your liaison may not know everything, but they can point you in the right direction!

PIs and their ​​staff are encouraged to contact their Scientific Liaison with any questions or problems related to animal use.
