There are regulatory requirements for personnel working with animals or working in animal areas. The Office of Animal Welfare (OAW), in conjunction with the Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM), Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC), and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), provide training, certifications, and screenings that meet these requirements. Visit this lesson to learn “How to Add New Personnel”.
All individuals working with animals must complete at least the following:
- University of Washington Animal Use Laws and Regulations training
- Animal Use Medical Screening (AUMS)
- Species-specific training classes are required for individuals using certain species, including a hands-on handling laboratory.
- Training and certification is required before performing select procedures.
Visit the Center for Laboratory Animal Training Resources (CLATR) for more information about training requirements. Note that training specific to work with non-human primates is provided through the WaNPRC.
If you have a question about what training your staff needs, please contact CLATR (clatr@uw.edu).
You can check what training you have completed by using the My Research Training Transcript (MRTT).
My Research Training Transcript (MRTT) allows researchers and research administrators to view their research-related required training records. Instead of visiting several separate compliance unit sites, you just need to visit this application created by the Office of Research Information Services (Oris).
*Please note that the Animal Use Medical Screening (AUMS) is not included in this application.
*Additionally, you can log in to HoverBoard and navigate to the protocol you are on to view all your training!
The Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) department manages the Animal Use Medical Screening (AUMS) program as a component of the University of Washington’s Animal Use Occupational Health and Safety Program that is required by Federal authorities. All individuals who work with animals at UW must be enrolled in the UW’s occupational health program.
The primary goal of this program is to evaluate and address potential health risks, as needed, that may be associated with your interface with laboratory animals in the research environment.
For more information please visit the AUMS program website or contact an Occupational Health Nurse at emphlth@uw.edu. If you do not have a UW netID, please contact an Occupation Health Nurse at emphlth@uw.edu.
The Office of Animal Welfare will send training requirement notifications (new or expired) for you and your project personnel via email and/or HoverBoard at the following times:
- when you submit a new protocol
- when you submit a triennial review
- when you submit a protocol amendment that includes adding new personnel to your project
Note: You and/or your protocol personnel may be required to update the Laws and Regulations training and/or Occupational Health and Safety screening up to three months before your actual course or screening expiration date. This will occur if your Laws and Regulations course and/or Occupational Health and Safety screening expire in the middle of an IACUC review cycle.
The Office of Animal Welfare checks required training on a monthly basis for all individuals currently approved on a protocol. Required training includes:
- Animal Use Medical Screening/Annual Health Assessment
- Animal Use Laws and Regulations
Personnel with expired training will be notified and given 1 week to update the required training. If training is not updated in this time, the personnel will be administratively removed from all protocols on which they are approved and sent an email with instructions on how to be added back to the protocol.
For any questions regarding this process, please contact oawrss@uw.edu.
