At the University of Washington, it is expected that social species are housed socially, and all species are housed and cared for in a way that facilitates the expression of species-typical behavior. On this page you will find Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Environmental Enrichment. Deviations from these SOPs qualify as husbandry exceptions and must be approved in your IACUC protocol.
For animals housed in spaces managed by the Department of Comparative Medicine, most husbandry exceptions also require a Special Service Request (SSR) to be submitted to the Facility Supervisor.
If you have questions about the SOPs or SSR process, please contact your Facility Supervisor.
If you have questions about the Environmental Enhancement Plan for non-human primates, please contact Behavior Management Services.
If you have questions about adding a husbandry exception to your protocol, please contact OAW at oawrss@uw.edu.
