ABSL-2 Rodent Carcass DisposalAll ABSL-2 carcasses must be placed in red carcass bags and securely closed. Do not include anything in the carcass bag other than the carcass (no syringes, paper towels, etc). ONLY carcasses are to be placed inside the bag, anything else must be disposed of in the proper way. Tags identifying the PI name, euthanasia date, and agent must be attached to the outside of the carcass bags. Carcasses from research labs must be transferred to a DCM Facility holding freezer and placed in a container marked with the biohazard symbol and lined with a red biohazard bag. Any other methods of disposal of ABSL-2 carcasses endangers the staff handling containers and cages being returned to facilities. |

ABSL-1 Rodent Carcass DisposalCarcasses must be placed in clear plastic bags that are available in DCM procedure rooms. This applies to animals that are euthanized in vivaria as well as in lab-managed spaces. Tags identifying the PI name and euthanasia date must be visible either in the bag or attached to the outside of the bag. Disposing of animals without identifying tags is a violation of UW policies and best laboratory practices. Carcass disposal in gloves is not acceptable. |

Euthanasia for Neonatal RodentsCO2 asphyxiation is not an effective or appropriate method of euthanasia for neonatal rodents 0-10 days of age. If CO2 exposure is used, a physical method such as decapitation is required after anesthesia is confirmed by toe pinch. Scissors must be in good working order (sharp and shiny) and used exclusively for decapitation. If you have questions or would like additional training, please contact Vet Services. |

Always Check Dirty CagesNever Assume a Cage is Empty Don’t be the one with animals found in the cage wash. Always check the cage before placing it in the dirty cage rack. Mice, especially pups, often hide in the bedding. Make it a habit to check the cages every time by raking your gloved hand through the bedding and nestlet. |
