The Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) is a compliance unit within the Office of Research providing support to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), as well as to researchers and educators who use live vertebrate animals and cephalopods as part of their program.
Our Mission and Vision
Protect the integrity and excellence of vertebrate animal and cephalopod care, research, and teaching at the University of Washington (UW). Provide comprehensive resources and outstanding services to the UW IACUC, faculty, staff, and other partners for navigating and complying with the rules and regulations regarding the use of vertebrate animals and cephalopods.
Our Service
The OAW facilitates the review of research protocols and grants involving live vertebrate animals and cephalopods. In addition, OAW provides oversight and compliance on behalf of the IACUC in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and regulations.
Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
OAW strives to create a workplace that reflects the community we serve and where everyone feels empowered to bring their full, authentic selves to work.
We’re passionate about creating an inclusive workplace that promotes and values diversity, fostering the values of our staff, faculty, researchers, and students with diverse and intersecting backgrounds.
We join the Office of Research in its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and share the view that DEI is not just a phrase, but a collection of values. We demonstrate this commitment, in part, through service on the Office of Research’s DEI committee.
