WaNPRC Animal Numbers

As a USDA-registered research facility, the University of Washington submits an annual report to the USDA that documents the use of animals regulated by the Animal Welfare Act in its research programs. The annual report submitted by the University of Washington includes information about non-human primates as well as other USDA-regulated species. The form used to submit the report requires institutions to list the animals in five columns based on the use of the animals. The definitions for each column are below.

    • Column B: animals held by a facility but not used in research that year. These animals are considered to be in the breeding colony.
    • Column C: animals used in research procedures that did not require pain-relieving drugs.
    • Column D: animals used in research where procedures had the potential to involve discomfort or pain; therefore, analgesics were administered to alleviate any potential discomfort.
    • Column E: animals used in research where analgesics would interfere with the scientific results or evaluation.
    • Column F: the total number of animals used in research (Column C + Column D + Column E).
