About non-academic writing…
In my work to bridge the gap between scholarly work and broader audiences I’m experimenting with the use of creative nonfiction, historical fiction, and narrative storytelling. By weaving factual research into compelling narratives, my goal is to make complex subjects more relatable and accessible. This includes works like Voices in Motion, which explores into the lives of Latino migrants in the U.S., and Echoes of Connection, which explores the evolution of information and communication technologies over the past century. Through these and other books, I aim to connect the past with present realities in ways that resonate with diverse readers. Storytelling has the unique ability to break through the formal boundaries of academic writing, offering a more engaging and human-centered way to explore complex issues. Academic writing often adheres to rigid structures, specialized language, and a focus on data, which can alienate non-expert audiences. In contrast, storytelling invites readers into the lives, emotions, and experiences of the subjects, making abstract concepts more tangible and memorable. By embedding research into narrative, I aim to humanize topics like migration, technology, and history, giving readers a personal connection to the material. For instance, Voices in Motion doesn’t just present data about Latino migrants—it tells their stories, showing their challenges, hopes, and resilience in ways that numbers or research interviews alone cannot convey. Similarly, Echoes of Connection narrates the evolution of communication technologies through the voices of three families, and the voices of the very artifacts that shaped history, creating a dynamic, conversational way to engage with technological debates. |
Acerca de mis escritos no académicos…
En mi trabajo para reducir la brecha entre el ámbito académico y un público más amplio, estoy ensayando el uso de la no ficción creativa, la ficción histórica y la novela. Al integrar investigación y en narrativas creativas, busco que los temas complejos que trabajo sean más accesibles y fáciles de comprender. Esto incluye obras como Voces en Movimiento, que explora las vidas de migrantes latinos en Estados Unidos, y Ecos de Conexión, que cuenta la evolución de las tecnologías de información y comunicación durante el último siglo en forma de novela. A través de estos libros, mi objetivo es conectar el pasado con las realidades presentes de manera que le llegue a más lectores. Las historias tienen la capacidad única de deshacer los límites formales de la escritura académica, ofreciendo una forma más atractiva y centrada en lo humano para explorar cuestiones complejas. La escritura académica suele ajustarse a estructuras rígidas, con un lenguaje especializado y un enfoque en los datos, lo que puede alejar a audiencias no expertas. En contraste, la narración creativa invita a los lectores a conocer las vidas, emociones y experiencias de los protagonistas, haciendo que los conceptos abstractos se vuelvan más tangibles y memorables. Al incorporar la investigación en la narrativa, busco humanizar temas como la migración, la tecnología y la historia, proporcionando a los lectores una conexión personal con el material. Por ejemplo, Voces en Movimiento no presenta datos sobre los migrantes latinos, sino que cuenta sus historias, mostrando sus desafíos, esperanzas y fuerza de maneras que los números o las entrevistas de investigación no pueden transmitir. De forma similar, Ecos de Conexión relata la evolución de las tecnologías de comunicación a través de las vidas de tres familias y de los propios artefactos que moldearon la historia, creando una forma dinámica y conversacional para conectar con los debates tecnológicos. |
Storytelling transcends the limitations of academic work by reaching people emotionally as well as intellectually, opening doors for deeper reflection and conversation. Through creative nonfiction and fiction, I aim to make academic research more accessible, relatable, and impactful.
