PFC’s 1st UAS & SfM project circa 2013

October 2013 – an over lunch 1 hour flight with a DJI Phantom 3 and a Nikon Coolpix @ Pack Forest accompanied by a field data pulse with 2 TLS sensors and a total station. We tested two altitudes of flight, and three forest types (high, med and low density. We had the point cloud data analyzed by dinner time and determined tree heights were measured to -/+ 5-10 cm in accuracy. The work was a collaboration with Dr. Akira Kato (PFC PhD Graduate 2009), now a professor at Chiba University in Japan, Dr. Andrew Hudak from the Idaho Forest Service Office was also there. Research team also included Dr. Jeff Richardson, Caileigh Shoot, and a few other student volunteers.
