About the speaker: Dr. Christine Bae is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban Design and Planning at UW. Her previous research related to equity is in the field of urban air quality, near-road transportation and land use, and pedestrian exposure to air pollution.

Presenter: Manish Chalana, Associate Professor (faculty page)
Title: Decolonizing Historic Preservation
Abstract: In this talk I argue that the fundamental theoretical framework of historic preservation remains rooted in white supremacy, covertly legitimizing white claims to the nation’s heritage at the cost of other groups. I will draw from on ongoing efforts in Seattle I am involved with that attempts at diversifying the historical records, however within an outdated system that continues to privilege white histories.
About the speaker: Dr. Chalana is an Associate Professor in the Urban Design and Planning, University of Washington. He is the Director of the Historic Preservation Graduate Certificate program and also Co-Director of the Center for Preservation and Adaptive Reuse (CPAR). His work focuses primarily on urban design, urban and planning history and historic preservation using lenses of equity and social justice.
