Title: Design by Algorithm: Theory and Practice of Data-driven Urban Design

Abstract from Prof. Kim: “I discuss the theory and practice of data-based urban design, which is one of the latest urban design methodologies today. After the principles and rationale of city design are historically reviewed, the theoretical characteristics of today’s data-based urban design are summarized in Parametric Design, Procedural Modeling, Integrated Environmental Design, Data Interoperability, and Communication Support. As a practical example, I present an urban design case for the inside commercial area of Bangi-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul. Then, I conclude the followings which are currently required for future tasks of data-based urban design: modeling of various built environments, development of intuitive coding for designers, creative innovation & reorganization of professions, integration of location-based (coordinate system, etc.) data, and practical transparency & openness of information.”
