How could the rapid climate change influence us and our community, as well as the ecosystem? How could our intervention improve climate resilience? Can urban planning facilitate mitigation and adaptation processes through planning instruments?

Cities are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, but they also play a critical role in mitigating climate change and adapting to climate-related crises. Urban areas, which house the majority of the world’s population and economic activities, are both a major source of emissions and a key battleground for climate action. The field of urban planning is facing a dual challenge in this context: to implement strategies that rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and to develop resilient urban systems that can effectively manage the increasing risks associated with climate change. In this context, the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Urban Design and Planning is hosting the 2024 Annual Symposium, themed: Planning for a Changing Climate: Key Considerations.

The student-organized, in-person symposium emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing climate challenges through planning tools. Distinguished professors, students, and alumni will come together in multiple discussion-based sessions to explore key topics such as climate impact, resilience, sustainable infrastructure, and climate action planning.
